Barker, Hayes On Streak

A good crowd of fans and race cars were on hand Saturday evening to see DeWayne Barker pick up his seconed sprint feature win in a row at the Warsaw Speedway. Winners of the other two features were Jim Taylor in the Limited Late Model Class and Harvey Hayes, making it two feature victories in a row for him in the Roadrunner Division.
Barker, in his Barker Auto Sales sprint car, fought a tough battle to a feature win. He dealt with heavy traffic, a dry, slick track, and especially the competition of charging Tony Elliott. The early leader was Dave Darland, who was putting distance between himself and the second place Elliott. By riding up high on the track near the middle of the race, Darland got too close to the third turn wall and flipped end-over-end ending the chance for his first feature victory at Warsaw. With Darland out of the race, second-place Elliott was handed the lead with Barker closing in as the race progressed. Finally, Barker passed Elliott near the end and held on to win the 25-lap event. Elliott placed second as Van Gurley and Bimbo Atkins finished third and fourth.
The first of two sprint car heats went to Jim Lipkey of Kokomo with Tom Jewel in second. Elliott captured the dash win and the other heat win with Darland placing second in the latter of the two races. In time trials, Don Walker Jr., flipped his car before even getting one lap recorded while Barker picked up quick time of 15.60.
In the Limited Late Model division, Jim Taylor of Kokomo, with his P1 numbered Camero, led the field to his first feature win this year. Second place went to Glenn Bradley with third and fourth going to Ron McKenzie and Hank Hilmer. The first heat was won by Jim Bucher Jr., with Hilmer picking up second and in the second heat the win went to Bradley with Scott Dausman in second. In qualifying, fast time went to Taylor with a mark of 18.68.
Proving to be a dominent leader in the Roadrunner class, Hayes won both the feature qualifying heat and the feature event in his number 49 race car. Other feature places went to Bob Johnson, James Holloway, and Gerold Holloway consecutively. Next Saturday, the speedway will again host the same three classes of cars with each division growing in number as we get further into the racing season.
