Well here's the latest update on Sophia!
She is back at Children's Memorial in Chicago! :(
I'm having mixed emotions about it! On the one
hand I'm very happy she's there because they took
much better care of her there. But I'm also sad
cause she is sick!
Sunday Morning the dr called me and said that
Sophia seems to have developed some sort of bug
in her tummy. It was causing her to have alot of
gas and causing respiratory problems!! I was very
worried. They told us to limit visitors until she
got over it because they had moved her to an open
bed for better observation.
Today(monday) I get a call at 4am from Dr K
telling me that they think Sophia has developed
pneumonia or a bacterial infection! She was being
transferred to Chicago and they would call me when
they knew more! I was a mess! I couldn't stop
crying, I couldn't get warm, I had a huge headache!
Finally 10 minutes later Dr K called back and I
went to get dressed while my husband called my
parents!
We got to the hospital and about 20 minutes later
the transport team arrived! Once again I got to
ride with her to the hospital! My husband and
parents were behind us!
They got her settled and did some xrays...turns
out that her right lung is partial collapsed..so
they are doing vibe therapy and giving her
antibiotics! When we left this afternoon she was
sleeping and doing well! The NP said she
doesn't even look sick! ANd they certainly
remember her from when she was there 3 wks ago!
We won't know for sure what's going on with her
until we get test results back..but please please
keep praying for her! Thanks!!

I am soo happy tonite!! We got some great news
today! First of all, Chris, the nurse, talked
to Anne Marie, the NP, about how I feel about
sending Sophia back. Guess what! She gets to
STAY in Chicago!! :) I am sooo happy about that!!
Even better news...they are going to try to take
Sophia off the vent tomorrow or Friday!! YAY!!!
I hope she tolerates it!! It will be soo nice
to not have to worry about her pulling it out!!
They lowered her vent settings today and they
were at the lowest they have ever been! YAY!
She was doing very well on them..her stats were
better than ever!! Her head u/s came back very
good...everything looks great!! I'm soo thrilled!!
I even got to hold her tonite!!! They also started
her back on her feedings!! Man am I ever glad she's
back at this hospital!! Woohoo!!

Sophia is OFF the ventilator!! Wahhoooooo!! She
is now on the CPAP!! I'm so excited! I got up
there around 11:30 and the nurse said they took
her off the vent at 8:30!! yay!! She's tolerating
it very well!!! I'm soo excited!! Thank you God for
this wonderful hospital!! I just can't believe that
she is off the vent! And she's only been back at
CMH for 4 days! I wanted to cry so hard when I
found out because I was soo happy!! But I laughed
instead! I'm so damn proud of her!
Okay..now I have to dampen the good news with a little bit of bad news! Sorry!!
Sophia had an eye exam today...She is showing
signs of ROP... it's where the blood vessels
start growing wrong..they have treatments for
it though! The dr said he will do eye exams
every week..if she starts to get worse then
he will do laser treatments...otherwise he will
see if it heals on its own!! And as we all know
with Sophia, she has overcome soo much on her
own without major intervention..let's hope and
pray this is another one of those things!!!

Hi all! Please forgive me for not updating as
much this time! This week has been pretty hectic.
My baby shower was on Sunday so I was helping to
get ready for that! It was so fun!
Sophia is doing great!! She seems to be getting
used to the CPAP! I'm so proud of her! She's also
at her max feeds for right now! 30cc's every 3
hours!! YAY!! I think that's like 1 oz or so
every 3 hrs! Something like that! She's tolerating
that very well too!
Daddy got to hear her cry too! It's the sweetest
sound to hear after not being able to hear it for
so long! When she gets really upset, she gets these
great big tears! Poor thing!
So that's about it! Nothing has really changed for
us! Just enjoying Sophia being off the vent! :)

Well, Sophia had to have laser surgery on her
eyes today! :( The drs. found ROP when they did
her eye exam. It's where the blood vessels don't
don't form or form abnormally. It was a very
heartbreaking thing to find out and to have to
deal with her having to have surgery! We won't
know how well the surgery went until they do
another eye exam in a week.
The good news is that even though they put the
breathing tube back in for surgery, they say
it will probably be able to come out tomorrow!
I hope so!!! The NP said they are hoping to get
her off the vent and CPAP and just have a cannula
put on..so then it will just be oxygen going to
her and no real added support! Hopefully if that
happens then we can try to start bottle feeding
her! When that happens I will be ecstatic!!
Well I will update again when I have more news!!

Well, Sophia is doing good after her surgery
so far. They have her back at her full feeds
and she is resting! She is still on the vent
but they are slowly lowering her settings so
I hope she's off of it soon!
So that's all I have for now!
December 20, 2003~WE HAVE SUCCESS!!!!
Sophia's eye surgery was a success!! I'm so
thrilled!! The surgeon who performed the
surgery did her eye exam yesterday and she
told us that Sophia's eyes look much better!!
I just wanted to hug her!!!
As of right now Sophia is still on the vent!
They are having a hard time getting her back
on the CPAP! But I know she will do it!! She's
a fighter!! She is getting soo big!! LOL..she's
now up to 4lb 2oz!! I can't believe we've gotten
to this point!! I can't wait to bring her home!!
Oh and I will now be doing weekly updates instead
of daily ones! Not enough changes going on right
now to do dailies!!

Happy Holidays!
I have a few things to talk about today! I'm so
happy! Sophia is now in a crib!!! We have so
much more access to her! No more reaching through
the doors of the isolette!! She seems to really
like her crib too! More room to wiggle! :)
We spent time with Sophia on Christmas Day and
we got to give her a bath for the first time!
It was so exciting! Mommy washed, while Daddy
dried her off! It was amazing! We also got to
weigh her! She is 4lb 13 oz!!! YAY!
They have also started giving Sophia a med to
help her lungs more! The nurse said it will help
in getting her off the vent again! I hope so! Anne
Marie told us that Sophia will probably end up with
Reactive Lung Disorder, meaning her lungs will be
very sensitive to things..ie a cold, smoke, the cat :(
But all in all she is doing great!!
It was wonderful spending our first Christmas as
parents..even if Sophia is still in the hospital!
I have faith that she will be home soon!
I can't wait to start the new year with Sophia!

December 30,2003~ Sophia is 3 months old!!
Well the eye dr called us last night! Sophia's
eyes look much better(2weeks after surgery) and
she said she is responding very well to the
surgery! YAY Sophia!! I'm so thrilled!
They have also upped her feedings from 40cc to
45cc! The nurse said this is her full feed amt!
Her vent settings have been getting lower and lower
so we're hoping she'll be off of the vent soon!
As of Sunday night she was 21% oxygen, which is
about what we breathe! We're praying she's off
the vent by the New Year or at least shortly after!!
She is now 5lb 2oz!! She's growing in leaps and
bounds! She has outgrown her smaller preemie
onesies so I'll have to get more! :)

Great news!!! Sophia is off the vent!!! They
took her off the vent and put her on the CPAP
at 1:30 this afternoon!!! She was doing very
well with it!!! I'm thrilled!!! That's quite
a birthday present for Sophia!! And quite a
nice way to bring in the new year!! YAY!!!
