Avon Indiana Haunted Railroad Bridge-Avon Indiana
Investigated on 3/12/2005 Revisited 4-27-05

Reported Haunting/Legend:

Reportedly an alcoholic, Henry Johnson, that came to work drunk to his job working on the bridge stumbled and fell into the wet cement and smothered before he was found. It is said you can still see his face in the cement but no one has ever found it. A young woman who was pregnant and feared being cast out of her family decided to follow the tracks to see where they went. When arriving to the bridge she flung herself over killing herself and her unborn child. If you drive under the bridge at night with your windows down, you can sometimes hear her scream. A young man's ghostly image who hung himself from the bridge over the creek can be seen.

Directions:

The Haunted Bridge is located over County Road 625 East in Avon, Indiana, Hendricks County.

Investigation:

The temperture was around 35. It was partly cloudy. This bridge is more isolated then the Danville Bridge. It also seemed to be a little smaller then the Danville Bridge. I found it odd that both bridges carry almost the exact same reported haunting. Maybe over time the legends have been confused as to what happened at each bridge. This question was posed to a couple people from the area and both seemed to think that the Danville bridge is the one that the Irish man fell to his death into the wet cement. During our visit we seen or heard nothing unusual. There are steps up to the top of the bridge, but a fence has been placed around these steps to prevent people from climbing onto the top of the bridge. The photos did not turn out so well but here they are.

We revisited the bridge during the day, to get a better look at the bridge. With the growth of the weeds, and the fences and locks it is almost impossible to gain access to much more then what you can see from the road. Not to mention it would be tresspassing. We were told that there are doorways between the arches that you can walk the length of the bridge, a close up showed this. Although it looks as if there has been tin placed in the archways possibly covering up the doorways that would allow you to walk the length of the bridge. It is rumored that at the end of the bridge is small rooms where you can see lanterns built into the bridge that were used by the workers building the bridge.

The following images were found on the Avon Library Website and I am placing them here because they are so interesting. You can visit their site here.
