Blocher Indiana Railroad Tracks
Investigated on 12/8/2004

Reported haunting is that a young girl in the 1970's was playing chicken with a train with a group of others, when her foot became stuck in the railing. She was unable to free herself and was hit and killed by the train. If you go to the tracks at midnight you can hear the sound of a train, and sometimes a scream of the young girl.

Directions: Interstate 65 to exit at Austin IN. Turn onto HWY 256, towards Madison IN and Hardy Lake. Follow HWY 256 until you reach junction HWY 3. Turn right and Blocher IN is about 3 miles from the intersection. Turn left off of Hwy 3 at the small general store on the right. Follow small street to Railroad Street turn right. We found a good place to park at the end of railroad street next to the firehouse.

We arrived to the railroad tracks at 11:30 p.m. and so decided to drive down railroad street again, just to make sure we were not missing a better spot to park. The railroad tracks have been torn up & the only thing that remains is the raised area that they sat on. There are many trailor homes parked along the tracks and most of them had junked cars sitting along what used to be the tracks. We parked finally by the firehouse at 11:40 p.m., shut off the car and rolled down the windows. I took a few pictures of the area but none turned out well at all, the grassy area you can see is the base of where the railroad bed started to rise. It is about a 3-4 foot raised area, which did not show up in my picture. We sat until 12:05 AM and at that point heard nothing but traffic on HWY 3 behind us. We then sat silent until 12:20 pm. At this point we decided that the area just did not seem very creepy at all, the loudest noise being some barking dogs in the background. We then crossed the tracks and drove along them the other direction thinking maybe we were in the wrong place. About 12:25 am the road started to turn away from the tracks, but we heard a kind of sound that maybe could be taken for a far off in the distance train. A few more feet revealed that the noise was coming from a few small electrical boxes at the side of the road. By 12:40 we hadn't heard or seen anything and decided to call it quits.

I am going to talk to some people and see if I can find where this story started. I do know that my parents knew the girl (I was told her name once) and they said she and other local teenagers were drinking at the time of the accident. I even beleieve my mother had a newspaper clipping from the local paper regarding the accident stored in a yearbook. If I remember right, the driver of the train didn't even know he hit her, and drug her quite a ways, far enough that it took awhile to find her. I will see if I can get a hold the clipping to post here.

Update 12-15-04:After speaking with several people that remember the incident and one that was actully present at the scene of the accident, I have found that the girl was about seventeen. A senior class party was being held on some property not in the town of Blocher, but somewhere between Blocher and Lexington Indiana. A witness reports that the girl was drinking and was apparently on the tracks yelling at the oncoming train. It is not fully known by the person present if she was actully playing chicken with the train or not. But several of the party goers were attempting to talk her down from the tracks since a train was approaching. They were unsuccessful and she was hit by the train. The train moving at a high rate of speed did stop, but was unable to stop for a few miles down the tracks. After the accident several of the party goers left, out of shock and being affraid of what would happen when the cops arrived. Several people went into the town of Lexington to call the cops and also related the story to other local teens at the hangout of the Lexington Elementary School. The people I spoke with stated that it was a very grisly scene with body parts strewn about, blood present along the tracks, and most memorable to one, hair stuck into the railroad tracks. The police were unable to locate all of the body parts that night, instead returning at daylight to continue their search for body parts. Being a small town, many local teens were present and all recall something about the accident. I am told that the witness to the accident would be glad to show me where the accident took place, but I declined since it is on private property and I do not believe that there is any type of haunting going on here. I have decided that this is a very sad story of the end of someones precious childs life, hopefully she is at rest where ever she is and her tragic ending prevented others from her generation from putting theirselves into a dangerous situation with an oncoming train. I was unable to locate the newspaper clipping from this accident from my mother. She says she doesn't believe she ever had one from this accident, but from another where a young person did play chicken with a train.
