The Girl in the Rain
August in Southern Indiana brings at times humidity so thick it weighs you down, afternoon thunderstorms are welcomed and that summer we retreated to the back porch during one of these storms. I sat next to grandma in the porch swing while mom and my sister sat in the rockers. We were enjoying learning how you can tell how far away the storm is by counting the seconds between the thunder (or lightning I don't really remember how to do this!), but grandpa was teaching us. When something caught my eye. In the side yard was the little girl me and my sister had seen in the pantry many years before, same long hair, same white dress, twirling around and around in the rain. She didn't appear to be getting wet. I watched her for a few minutes, before turning my eyes back to the porch and everyone else. It took me a couple of minutes to register what I had just seen. When I turned to look again she was gone.
