Quarter Milers

1929 Ford Roadster

"OL' '48"

Ever since 1962 when the Ala Kart double kit first came out and I saw the side panel with that all so kewl nostalgic Model "A" on it, I knew I had to build one. It took me until the mid 70's to finally getting around to it.

Altered Bantam Roadster

I always loved these old Altereds. I made this one mostly out of the old Revell parts packs....Tubular frame, Competition wheels & tires, and of course, the Bantam body kit.

The mill is a big block Ford out of the Ohio George 33 Willys kit to which I installed some old ram tube injectors I found in my parts bins just for a diffent look. I hate conformity.

The interior was also pieced together from my parts bin with the roll bar scratch built from solid brass tubing.

1962 Mercury Comet Funny Car

"Pretty in Pink"

As I've mentioned before, sometimes I feel the need to build (?) these original AMT annual kits....isn't that what they were made for? This one I named "Pretty in Pink".

After some body modifications including molding in the bumpers and smoothing the body, it was hinged onto an AMT "Piranha" mid-engined frame.

BMW Isetta Front Engined Dragster

Ok, now we'll get back to the weird stuff....can't stay away too long. This dragster was pictured in the Scale Auto Enthusiast Magazine's "Contest Annual" '96-'97.

I had to fill in the wheel wells, well there was only 2, then I dropped it onto a Tony Nancy dragster frame with a Pontiac 421 c.i. engine from the old AMT parts packs.

Altered Fiat Coupe

This little Altered was almost right out of the original AMT Double Dragster kit. I changed the wheels and engine....that's about it.

I used the all chrome 426 "Fire Dome" Hemi out of an old AMT parts pack.

Sealing the three piece body together allowed it to be taken off without performing a juggling act.

1966 American Motors Marlin Altered Wheelbase Funny Car

"Shadow"

I took this Johan kit and altered the wheelbase and then painted in Boyds deep blue pearl.

I then hinged it onto a Revell "Miss Deal" chassis because it gave me that "in the clouds" stance I was looking for.

Once again I used the all chrome 426 "Fire Dome" Hemi all plumbed & wired out of an old AMT parts pack but this time I threw on a set of milled aluminum velocity stacks reminiscent of those good old days.

Top Fuel 3-wheeled Messerschmitt

This appeared in the 1999-2000 issue of Scale Auto Enthusiast's "Contest Annual" and a magazine from Sweden called "V8 Magazine" in June of 1999. This is the other half of that Messerschmitt/Isetta kit. I figured if I screwed up one of em, I had to mess up this one too.

I tilted the canopy to allow access into the full race cockpit. It just feels like it was made for this application....right?

I scratch built a jack shaft drivetrain w/one big meat in the rear. Ok, I guess I must've smoked some really good stuff that day huh?

Renault Dauphine Gasser

"Little Stovebolt"

I had this old Hubley model that I built stock (it could happen) way back in the 60s. One day in the 80s while sipping a martini, (well, it was like a martini but in vapor form) I lost all control of my better judgement, awoke a few days later and this is what I found.

Twin 4-Banger Engined Dragster

I started out with a Mickey Thompson "Attempt 1" dragster frame, then stretched it a little bit.

I then jammed in two of the 4 cylinder Supercharged Pontiac Tempest engines (8 cyl engines split in half).

Tucker Mid-Engined Funny Car

I did quite a few body modifications to this cyclops then stretched a funny car chassis (ALOT) and dropped the beast onto it. Hey, the way I figure it, when somethings this ugly, why not make it a race car....ryt?

1925 "T" Altered

I started with the "Wild Willie Borsch" kit, removed that ugly spoiler, hollowed out the front portions of the frame rails, changed the wheels & tires and did an engine swap with the Hemi out of the 53 Studebaker kit. Other than that, it's pretty much out of the box.

This just goes to show that one doesn't have to do a lot to a kit to make it your own.

Tym to move on....
