24 hours With Brandon Boyd

Torn between touring with one of the biggest bands in the world and a peaceful, idyllic life of surfing, Brandon's been catching up with his spiritualist books. Just don't call him 'new age'..

"Sleeping on the road-or anywhere else!-has never really been a problem for me. If i'm tierd, I can fall asleep on a bed of nails! I sleep during soundchecks and stuff...on the stage. When i'm home, the day begins with me doing everthing I can to not wake up to my alarm clock. When we're on the road, we often have a very rigorous schedule, but waking up to an alarm isn't spirtually the best thing for anybody, especially me! So, while i've been home, my main priority has been to surf as much as possible. i live on a hill that overlooks the water, and it's a short drive away. The place where I surf is also about eight minutes away from my house. It's difficult to say what the best place to surf in Southern California might be. That would really depend on who you ask, but I go to Malibu a lot to a place called Surfrider's Beach. It's where I grew up surfing, so thats a favourite spot.
"You lose touch with people when you've been touring. Since i've been home, i've been getting to know my family and my friends again. I bought a house when we were finsihing 'Morning View' and i'v spent almost no time there at all. I've been slowly decorating it, unpacking books and CDs and things. I have a lot of books, and when i start one, i have to finish it relatively quickly. There were only two books that i haven't finished, and that was because they were just...bad! I've been specifically interested in books that promote what i like to call 'modern thought' because i hate the term 'new age'. Some of the so-called 'new age' books are really, really awful, and it's because there's many people trying to capitalise on the trend. There's a bookstore a go to in LA called The Bodhi Tree thay sells many of the best books on the subject. I especially like Colin Wilson's books. He's a really great author, he writes a lot on occult matters.
"Food-wise. I've been eating a lot of raw fish at home, which is really nice because we don't get a lot of it when we're on the road. It's been good to hang out and make some new friends. i love Italian and Mexican food too. The sushi restaurants around LA are generally really good.
Strangely enough when we're on the road I prefer a tour bus to a hotel room. The bus has a nice vibration that puts you to sleep very easily, like a baby. This makes touring a lot easier..."
