History Of Chamblee JROTC

 

LTC Sitero - - - 1SG Horton

 

LTC Chuck Sitero retired from active duty as the provost marshal of third army at Fort McPherson GA, in July 1994 to start the first and only army JROTC program in DeKalb county on July 1, 1994.

 

LTC Sitero is a 1974 graduate of the military academy at West Point, has a master's degree in psychology from Columbia University in New York City, and a masters in political science from the Naval War College in New Port Rhode Island. LTC Sitero has taught at West Point Brooklyn College, and at Georgia Military College offered at Fort McPherson. His overseas assignments include Germany, Korea, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He was a military police officer who also worked extensively with the National Guard and Reserves. 1SG Horton came on board to help LTC Sitero in 1998. 1SG Horton served over 21 years in the infantry, was on the Army Drill Team, the Old Guard, was a Drill SGT, attended the SGM academy, served in Desert Storm for 9 months, and he was the combat infantry badge and airborne wings. 1SG Horton is the expert in drill, ceremony and color guard for all of DeKalb Schools.

 

The Chamblee program has held the highest distinction bestowed upon an army JROTC unit since the very first year, the Honor Unit with distinction. The program has placed at region and state Drill Meets since the beginning of 1SG Horton's tenure, and LTC Sitero's Rifle Team went to region tournament in 2002. The program has also won the JROTC basketball tournament several times. Many of Chamblee's JROTC students have earned full ROTC Scholarships to top colleges and some have gone on to West Point and the Naval Academy. The program has taken numerous field trips to such places as Fort Benning, GA, Fort Gordon, GA, Fort Rucker, AL, Norfolk Naval Base, VA, the Air Force Museum in Macon, GA, etc.

 

The program participates in all county intramural sports tournaments, all region and state Drill Meets, all Color Guard performances for every major event at Chamblee High School and in the community, and all Rifle matches at region. The program has averaged enrollment of well over a hundred students since its second year in existence.

 

The Chamblee JROTC program will continue to provide excellent support to the school and the community supporting such community service activities as the empty stocking fund, Youth Crime Watch and many others. The Program will remain in always the First and only Army JROTC program in DeKalb County.
