Frequently Asked Questions

Are Dalmatians Good With Children?

If properly socialized from an early age, the Dalmatian can be an excellent companion with children. Of course, children have to learn not to poke at eyes or pull tails. Young toddlers do however, run the risk of being knocked over, or swatted with a wagging tail.

How much exercise does a Dalmatian require?

Besides plenty of play time in a secured yard, a Dalmatian does benefit from two to three daily walks. We find a playmate is a great way for Dals to exercise, but be prepared to "Calm them down" after a good romp in the yard.

Do Dalmatians shed?

Yes, Dalmatians do shed, and year around! The short stiff hairs are capable of weaving themselves into most fabrics, making it very difficult to remove. A good, daily brushing seems to help.

Do Dalmatians do well as outdoor pets?

Because Dalmatians do not possess an under-coat like the Collie or Labs, it’s hard form them to stay warm once the temperature drops below freezing. My rule of thumb is, "If I can’t be comfortable outdoors with a short sleeved top, it’s too cold for the Dals to stay out for long periods of time."

Are Dalmatians stupid?

On the contrary! Dalmatians will outsmart you and are capable of solving problems on their own. Dalmatians become bored quickly, so when training, keep the sessions short and fun. Like children, Dals have minds of their own and constantly test their boundaries. Start training when the Dal is young, and be consistant.

Should Dalmatians be crate trained?

As with all other breeds, a Dalmatian, if properly trained sees his crate as home. It becomes a secure refuge from active children and a place to rest when tired. While away from home, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your companion isn’t destroying one room at a time, and upon your return home it’s "HAPPY TIME" for both yourself and your Dalmatian. Use a crate for reasonable amounts of time only.

Are Dalmatians hyper?

Dalmatians were bred to travel great distances following carriages as guardians against highwaymen. So if ignored or not exercised properly Dals will find a way to vent all that extra energy. Obedience training is very important in order that the Dal learn boundaries and do what’s expected of him.

Can I keep a Dalmatian in an apartment?

No matter where you live, Dals need two ingredients in order to live a happy life. Your company and exercise. Several walks daily and a weekly access to an off lead area where he can run off excess steam. (Make sure you train him to come when called before turning him loose!) or a fenced in area works well to play frisbee or ball.

Do Dalmatians do well on their own?

That all depends on how much time they'll be on their own. A few hours will do no damage, provided you spend quality time with your Dal when you get home. None of this feed, pet and go in to watch TV. Your Dal wants to play, and play you must, otherwise he'll find a way to use up that excess energy. A bored Dalmatian is an inventive Dalmatian!

What were Dalmatians bred for?

Originally Dals were bred as guard dogs, following the coaches and protecting their human companions against highwaymen. Dalmatians tend to be strong-willed. If they are not raised with a gentle, but firm hand they will run the household.
