Operation Nitro!
Topic: Deep Freeze '05 - Operation Nitro !.........Planning phase begins
It's time for another Winter outing , a Deep Freeze if you will!......
Well don't just sit there, pack your sled, toboggan, pack whatever and come
on out and have a blast on Nitro creek
Enough mulling around the canoe, explore water thick enough to walk on!
(although some may claim this ability year round)
Yes it's time to begin your plans to attend Deep Freeze '05. Once again
folks will travel to Sudbury, board the "Budd Car" and head off up the tracks
only to jump off somewhere and strike off into the bush for a winter
gathering!!
When does this premier event, the highly anticipated and elaborate cotillion
occur:
Saturday February 19 - Sunday the 27th if you're feeling like you're one
right out of the coo coo's nest and need to get out of the house big time (8
nights)
Tuesday February 22 - 27th for those who are only stir crazy (5 nights)
Thursday February 24 - 27th for the only lightly touched! (3 nights)
This will be the 4th annual soiree to be held and the 3rd which involves the
"Budd Car" service to get everyone off the beaten path. The past 2 gatherings
were held south of Metagama which is west of the forks of the Spanish River
north of Sudbury. However the area south of where we camped is slated to be
logged this winter so we will be pulling our gear into a different area this
year. The train leaves Sudbury on Sat/Tues/Thursdays at about 9:30 am and
returns to Sudbury on Weds/Fri/Sundays at about 6:30 pm. That's it, buy a
ticket, load your sled and gear into the baggage car and go, pick your
departure date and the group returns on Sunday (although folks have come and
gone on any of those days due to committements etc) The train stops where you
want and then picks you up for the return journey. Simple and quite unique!
So.... Got you interested yet? Last year 34 people attended up from 20 in
2003just and it would be fair to say they all enjoyed themselves just a wee
bit. This is a great way for folks to give winter camping a try with a
experienced group using all manner of shelters from wall tents with wood
stoves to igloos, quinzees and good old dome tents.
Oh yeah, just exactly where is this jump off somewhere place? If you're
familiar with the area northwest of Sudbury the area is located between the
Spanish R and Highway 144. Its located between Stralak and Pogamasing
(sidings on the railway) along Nitro Creek, this area is a bit southwest of
Halfway Provincial Park. The plan is to head east along the creek drainage
for 3-4 kms and find a place to setup. This area is pretty well untouched at
the present time. Folks spend their time snowshoeing into different areas,
ice fishing (this is a coldwater fishery area-trout, and access through
another drainage to warm water fisheries-pike, walleye), cards, socializing
with old and new friends, and some have been known to eat a meal or two
(when's 2nd breakfast chummy?). Here is a link to a map (700kb file, may take
awhile to load)

The 1:50000 topo sheet is Pogamasing 41-I/13
Anyway, it's time to clear the decks and pencil some dates into your dance
card and start planning for DF '05.
