~ Domestic Violence Statistics ~

  • Between 1/3 and 1/2 of all adult women are beaten by their spouses or partners at some point in their lives


  • 14% of American women acknowledge having been violently abused by a husband or boyfriend


  • 92% of women who were physically abused by their partners did not discuss these incidents with their physicians


  • 57% did not discuss the incidents with anyone


  • In the United States every 9 seconds a woman is physically abused by her partner


  • Within the last year almost 4 million women ( 7% ) who are married or living with someone were physically abused


  • Nearly 38 million ( 37% ) were verbally or emotionally abused by their partner


  • Two-thirds of attacks on women are committed by someone the victim knows


  • Most often these attacks are by their husband or boyfriend


  • The level of injury resulting from domestic violence is severe


  • Out of 218 women presenting at a metropolitan emergency department with injuries due to domestic violence


  • 40% had previously required medical care for abuse


  • 28% required admission to the hospital


  • 13% required major treatment

  • 42% of murdered women are killed by their intimate male partners


  • 4,000 women are killed each year because of domestic violence


  • Women are more often victims of domestic violence than victims of burglary, muggings and all other physical crime combined


  • Nationally domestic violence costs employers 3 to 5 billion dollars annually due to absenteeism


  • Medical expenses from domestic violence also total between 3 to 5 billion dollars annually


  • In most States animal shelters out number domestic violence shelters approximately 10 to 1


  • Domestic violence is repetitive in nature and generally escalates


  • 1 in 5 women victimized by their spouse or ex-spouse reported that they had been a victim of a series of at least 3 assaults in the last 6 months


  • 35% of emergency room visits by women are for symptoms that may be the result of spousal abuse


  • As few as 5% of these victims are ever categorized as domestic violence


  • The FBI estimates that a woman is raped every 6 minutes in the U.S.


  • Rape victims range in age from 4 months to 92 years


  • 40% of all rapes occur in the victim's home


  • An estimated 70% of men who abuse their female partners also abuse their children


  • Homes where spousal abuse occurs children are 1500% more likely to be abused also


  • Nearly 1/2 of the violent crimes against women are not reported to the police
