Bandits cart off $5M from Corriverton Market
--- after locking up guards
SIX armed bandits broke into Corriverton Market around 1.30 yesterday morning and carted off $5 to 6 million from four stalls - after locking up six market constables in one of the stalls.

The robbery has led Corriverton Mayor Roy Baijnauth to issue a strong appeal to businesspeople to be extra vigilant and be far more security conscious amid attempts by opportunity criminals to pounce on vulnerable people during the holiday season.

Reports from Berbice are that the bandits made their way into the recently rehabilitated No. 79/Corriverton Market, rounded up the guards, bundled them into one stall and proceeded to rob Ravo Persaud (jeweler), Anil and Sons Jewelry, Rishi Gamandi Grocery and B. Persaud Boutique.

The theft was discovered later yesterday when the market opened to let in vendors and stallholders for what they hoped would be another bright business day.

They found the constables locked up in one of the stalls.

Investigators are wondering why jewels were left in the showcases of both Ravo Persaud and Anil and Sons overnight, noting that such a practice was highly unusual and a breach of conventional security precaution.

All six constables were being held by police and were assisting in the investigations into the heist.

During a recent inquiry into operations at the Corriverton Town Council market, vendors and stallholders had expressed grave security concerns.

PPP/C Member of Parliament Zulficar Mustapha and Community Relations Officer, Office of the President, Faizal Jafarally, visited the market yesterday and spoke with the affected stallholders, echoing the need for extra vigilance especially at Christmas time.

Investigations continue into Corriverton Market robbery
POLICE are continuing investigations into a robbery by five armed, masked men at the Corriverton Municipal Market, Berbice, on Thursday morning.

The gunmen carted off millions of dollars in gold and silver jewellery, brand name sneakers and groceries from several stalls, after tying up the Market’s guards.

A Police release said that about 01:30 hours on Thursday morning, the bandits scaled the fence and entered the compound where they held up the security guards.

It said that the robbers broke into a stall and locked the security guards inside, after which they broke and entered five other stalls in the jewellery section of the market. They made off with a large haul of gold and silver jewellery, footwear and groceries.
