Shel Silverstein

Sheldon Allan Silverstein (September 25, 1930 – May 10, 1999)
Better known as Shel Silverstein, was an American poet, singer-songwriter
musician, composer, cartoonist, screenwriter and author of children's books
He styled himself as Uncle Shelby in his children's books.
Translated into 20 languages, his books have sold over 20 million copies

Excerpt from Wikipedia

I don't recall when I started reading him (such is my head)
but I know that as soon as I "discovered" him, I was hooked
He is my biggest influence and I truly wish I had gotten the chance to meet him
I do now through his work
This is my tribute to him:

World Without Shel
a triolet

World without Shel?
A place I don't want to be in
Just another empty shell
World without Shel?
It would be this poet's hell
Like the seasons without Spring
World without Shel?
A place I don't want to be in

Shel Silverstein

He made children laugh
with a GIRAFFE AND A HALF
and the world became ecstatic
with A LIGHT IN THE ATTIC

Off his hat, from pure habit
he pulled a RUNNY BABBIT
wowed the world with his pen
past WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS

If today alive were he
I'd befriend him on FB
and if heaven allowed poets to tweet
I'd follow Shel in a heart beat

Does NOT want rhyme

Shel Silverstein is turning in his grave
Rhyme is something the nation no longer craves
Editors all over are turning up their noses
Violets are blue, RED (from rage) are roses

Rhyme with a punchline, it gets you in the door
Read it at open mics, you'll have them on the floor
Whimsical, witty, lighthearted, funny and clever
Give up on who I am? Not here, not now, not ever!

Ode to Shel Silverstein
my first monotetra ever

A little bit of self-esteem
is what I need to reign supreme
live out my dream, be just like him:
Shel Silverstein, Shel Silverstein!

He wrote about a GIVING TREE
I want to be as good as he
Although I think I'll never be...
It's fine with me; it's fine with me

Of all his fans, I'm number one
He wrote the silliest poems, BAR NONE
although his time on earth is done...
His work lives on, his work lives on!
