Last week, the Supreme Court issued notices to all states seeking their views on the MCI's proposal for a single CET. Tamil Nadu, which abolished CET for professional courses in 2007, has opposed the MCI's move. However, the Karnataka government has given a thumbs-up to the Medical Council of India's proposal to conduct a single eligibility-cum-entrance exam for MBBS courses in colleges across the country.
Currently, besides the Karnataka government's CET and Comed-K's UGET, students are forced to appear for at least a dozen exams to study medicine in institutions across Karnataka. Of the 136 medical colleges in south India, 39 colleges are in Karnataka alone.
A single exam is seen as a benefit for students who can appear for only one examination and be eligible for admission to all medical colleges.
