All of February: 10 to 5pm
Location
: Albina Community Bank in the Pearl, 430 NW 10th Ave, Portland
Artist: Sylvia Welch:  I was born and educated in Dayton, Ohio. After working in California and Europe, I settled in Portland, Oregon and have never regretted the move!
Being able to neither paint nor draw, I studied spinning and weaving.
I loved dyeing wool and working at my loom and borrowed wheel.
However, life has a way of replacing the things we love to do with the things we must do. After a time, I realized I had to make the time to again do
something I love. I have gone from spinning and weaving to creating
fabric wall-hangings. I love natural/earthy colors but use bright
shades as well.
My wall-hangings are not historical or social documents, but
experiments with modern designs made from materials from around the
world.

Artist: Sunshine Dixon: Collection of pieces from recent shows: mixed
media and canvas.
Artist: Jamaal Folsom: black and white prints
Artist: Monica Lester-Bell: Mosaic and Glass work

Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center:  Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center announced its 11th Annual Kwanzaa Celebration, December 4 ? 31, 2003. Local African American artists and community members will exhibit textiles, paintings, prints, drawings, photography, mixed media works and sculpture to reflect one or more of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, featuring artists: Mufu Ahmed, Maria Alves, Silas Clark, Leslie Cote, Sunshine Dixon, Stacey Drake Edwards, Sharon Geraci, Gene Hill, Roslyn Hill, Andrew Johnson, Samuel Jones, Londo, Renee Mitchell, Philemon Reid, Charles Rex-Gunnell, Ann Roger-Williams, Jacob Vercouteren, and Sylvia Welch

First Thursday, December 4, from 5:00 PM ? 8:00 PM, a free public reception will open the exhibition with traditional drumming by Calvert & Lasan Johnny. December 31,
12 PM - 5 PM, IFCC welcomes families for a Kuumba Celebration of the principle of Creativity. Artist Ann Williams will offer instructions for monoprints as a part of the zawadi (giftmaking) workshop from 12 PM until 2:00 PM. Storytelling by Sunshine Dixon will begin at 2:00 PM in the gallery. At 3:00 PM, educator Joyce Harris will lead the libation ceremony and share the history of Kwanzaa with community drummers Art Alexander, Calvert & Lasan Johnny. The Karamu (community feast) will begin at 4:00 PM with light snacks and beverages to close our celebration.

Kwanzaa, a non-religious celebration, is derived from the Swahili phrase "Matunda Ya Kwanza" meaning "first fruits" and suggests a theme of thanks and celebration inspired by traditional African harvest festivals. Professor Maulana Ron Karenga originated this uniquely American celebration in 1966 during a time of social and political turmoil, teaching seven principles known as "Nguzo Saba." These guiding principles, Umoja/Unity; Kujichagulia/Self-determination; Ujima/Collective Work & Responsibility; Ujamaa/Cooperative Economics; Nia/Purpose; Kuumba/Creativity; and Imani/Faith, were seeds planted by African Americans to reap positive change for their communities. Each principle is reflected upon in a candle lighting ceremony, one for each day of Kwanzaa, December 26 through January 1.

IFCC is an independent, community-based, nonprofit center for the performing, visual and literary arts and arts education. In its 21st year, IFCC is dedicated to creating an environment in which people of every cultural background can come together as artists and audience to explore, preserve and celebrate their diversity. Call 503-823-2072 or email gallery@ifcc-arts.org for more information or visit our website at www.ifcc-arts.org.

Nappy Roots Press:  ?.Nappy Roots expanded into a publishing company in 2001 out of meeting someone else's need. Renee (the owner) had been participating in the spoken-word scene for several years. A fellow poet and recording artist, Rochell D. Hart, asked Renee to help her publish a limited second-edition of her second book of poetry, ?A Black Girl?s Song.?
(Rene) was then approached by another Portland poet, Sunshine Dixon
. After publishing Dixon's first poetry book, "No Illusions," Renee decided to start taking her own poetry more seriously. She has since published two collections of her own poetry. She has also written plays and recorded a spoken-word CD?.. http://www.nappyrootspress.com/Nappy%20Roots%20History.htm
