The Dream of a Common Language

The idea for “The Dream of a Common Language" music program grew from witnessing the extraordinary talents possessed by youth in the west broadway neighborhood and questioning why there wasn’t a program that offered music as an outlet for their creativity.

The west broadway neighborhood centre is a not-for-profit organization that has worked diligently to develop and maintain programs that gives youth the opportunity to explore and enhance their interests and abilities. The centre is a safe place for the youth to come together and take part in a wide variety of free activities such as cultural programs, matrial arts classes, academic support, computer programs and recreational activities. Their recipe for success is actually quite simple; provide youth in the inner city with activities and support and watch them soar to great heights.

The interest and talent already exist! It is a matter of committed community members, partners and staff working together to put the programs in place. At present we are in the initial stages of getting the music program up and running.

The first step was to spread the word that we are looking for volunteer instructors and donations of old instruments that we needed to get the program underway. Benefit concerts and CD’s have been planned. Musicians from many different musical genres and backgrounds have offered their time as volunteer teachers and mentors.

The program is still in the need of partners to successfully give youth in the neighborhood the opportunity to develop their musical abilities, establish a forum for them to discuss their opinions, to vent frustrations, to share stories and emotions, to express their creativity and build self esteem.

We hope that we can count on your support to offer young people in the west broadway the chance to discover first hand the powerful language that speaks to us all; music.
