The Caravaggio Profile

Caravaggio's real name was Michelangeo Merisi. He lived from 1573-1610. Caravaggio's paintings were mainly of the religious sort as he often depicted the deposition as well as judgement. Although he was a great artist, one of the greatest things that he is known for is being a criminal. He was often on the run as he was imprisoned and considered a criminal on many of occasions. He was charged with murder in the ear 1606 for the charge of murder. He would normally flee to Naples and create some of his lesser-known paintings; such as the Flagellation of Christ and the Burial of Saint Lucy.

In the majority of his paintings, you will notice his manneristic background in which he normally uses red, brown, and black. He was seemingly depressed and religiously confused as most of his artwork shows. Especially in Death of the Virgin, you can notice the influence of his possible belief in atheism as he insults the Virgin by dressing her in red and by not showing her as youthful and vibrant. He normally painted things off-center and out of proportion. He was, overall, a confused artist and believer in Christ and was known to be a hardcore criminal in his own time.
