After reading it I wouldnt say it was so much about lessons on how to live, it's just this guy saying what his life was like and how he's been happy with it, even though it involved work since he was old enough to move on his own (which made him unable to ever learn how to read), segregation, the KKK, etc. It makes you really feel thankful for all you have, and feel bad for being all whiney for no good reason (as most of us are known to be at times).
