Additional Background Information: Where
do I begin? First off, Bertell Dache is not Tony Orlando, nor was he
ever Tony Orlando. Period. This misinformation is finally getting
corrected in the history books but people who have believed the myth
since it first started back in the 70's are not buying it. Gerry
Goffin, who wrote several Bertell Dache sides, recently confirmed in an
interview that Bertell was an African American singer, this information
can be read in a couple of recent ACE label cds featuring Bertell's
recordings. Musician Artie Kaplan, who played saxophone on some of
Bertell's sessions remembers him vividly, the same way Gerry Goffin
did. Songwriter Artie Wayne also wrote songs with Bertell in the early
1960's when both of them were still trying to make it in the music
business (none of these songs ever were recorded by anyone -- Dache
also wrote some songs with Carole King and Gerry Goffin) and he too
could confirm that Dache was not Orlando, as he also got to know
Orlando during this time. Tony Orlando's people have never given a
definitive answer from Tony directly, mostly because he himself
probably can't believe people think he cut records under this name or
he doesn't like being bothered with people assuming they are the same.
He likely knew of and had met the real Dache at some point.
Here is what is known about Bertell Dache, aka Bertel Dash, Bert
Daché, Bertelle Dache, Bertell Dach'e and Burt Dache:
His birthname was Bertell Dash. His mother was Mrs. Gertrude Dash. He
was the youngest of 10 children: sisters, Juanita Dash, Shirley Foreman
and Marie Dash. Brothers: Nathaniel, Kenneth Sr., Jerome Sr., Andre
(Sonny), Howard and George Dash. His children were Paul Dash and Marcus
Dash. He has a nephew in the entertainment industry named Kenny Dash
Jr. His sister-in-law, Lennie Dash (Kenny Dash Sr's wife), is still
living in New York. In the early 1960's she and Bertell's sister
Shirley ran a Bertell Daché fan club. In the late 1950's Bertell
appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, as a substitute member of the Rays,
backing up Hal Miller (the rest of the actual group was recovering from
a car accident they were in on their way to the Sullivan appearance,
and three young singers were brought in as replacements, Bertell being
one of them). He married his wife Eva (Evelyn) in September of 1963
(The marriage later ended in divorce, shortly before Bertell passed
away from a brain aneurysm). In the mid 1960's (after his United
Artists releases but prior to his Diamond release) Bertell scored a
recording contract with MGM records but nothing ever was released from
those sessions.
Bertell P. Dash was born on January 19th, 1938 and died on September
1st, 1987. He lived most of his life in Brooklyn, where he passed away
after he ran out of blood pressure medicine and climed 11 flights of
stairs to his mother's apartment (where he was living after his
divorce) where he ultimately collapsed and died.
His funeral was held at Antioch Baptist Church in Brooklyn (which still
exists to this day) and he is intered at Pinelawn Cemetary in
Farmingdale, NY.
Thank you to Ricky Dash and Kenny Dash Jr. for the information
mentioned here. If other members of Bertell's family would like to
write in, more information, corrections, pictures, etc would be very
welcome.
