William the Bloody earned the nickname 'Spike' from the way he used to torture his victims -- with railroad spikes. Spike is approximately 200 years old and has killed 2 previous Slayers in the past 100 years. After a breakup with Drusilla, Spike has returned to Sunnydale, and was up to his old vampish tricks, until he was captured by the Initiative. Now he's stuck with a chip in his head that prevents him from killing anything that isn't evil (except for Buffy, since she had died, and was brough back to life). Spike now helps Buffy in her battles, not only because as he put it, but also because he cares for her. Spike falls in love with Buffy and then addmits it to her in Seasons 4-5. In Season 6 Buffy is 'numb' after being pulled out of Heaven by her Friends, and turns to Spike for comfort.
