prologue

Disclaimer: Yep. He's mine. And did you SEE that lovely green sky yesterday? Those indigo pigs with their neon yellow wings really looked magnificent in contrast, don't you think?
A/N: Okay, I know I should be working on Pawprints, but I like this idea a lot, so here you are. I'm not entirely sure where this is going, but I have a vague idea. I just really wanted a high school fic, but I have trouble writing AU fics. R&R, even if it stinks!

“Inuyasha!” Kagome screamed as tears burned a stinging trail down her raw, bleeding face. She strained to see the expression on the red and white figure far beneath her. The salty drops fell from her chin, landing on the rocks far below. His amber eyes looked up at her sorrowfully.

“I would have stayed with you, Kagome,” he whispered and the girl above read the words on his lips. “I swear I’ll find you again, someday.” The vow echoed in her head as she nodded, another tear falling. This one landed directly on the hanyou’s cheek. His eyes closed and his hand found its way to it, touching the droplet longingly.

“Goodbye, my love,” he breathed, and was engulfed in the white-purple light that had been hardly noticeable a moment before. Kagome shielded her eyes, the tears falling swifter than ever as sobs wracked her frame. When she was able to see again, there was nothing left, not even a scar where the earth had yawned open to swallow him. A bloodcurdling cry tore at the young miko’s throat. It was the most anguished sound imaginable, carrying the weight of a thousand tragedies. Suddenly, she slumped against the rock behind her, drained of all her energy.

“Damn her to hell!” she growled.

All of a sudden, she began to laugh. “To hell!” she gasped through her mirth.

It was like this that Sesshoumaru found her, around 15 minutes later. He looked at her, annoyed. His lip curled slightly as he knelt before the hysterical woman.

She inhaled sharply and stopped laughing. “Inu- Inuyasha?” she inquired upon seeing the golden eyes that the brothers shared.

“No,” he stated simply, and began to untie the ropes that bound her hands. “My younger brother is gone, taken into hell after Kikyou. Surely even you, with your worthless human eyes, saw that.”

Kagome winced as he began work on the binds holding her ankles. “Careful!” she breathed. “My legs are broken, I think.”

Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes, but continued on with more care. Once the young priestess was free, he hefted her into his arms bridal-style, making sure not to hurt her.

“You have cost me much time, woman,” he muttered under his breath as he carried her to a safer spot. “Naraku is still around somewh-"

But the elegant inu-youkai was not to finish his sentence. A triumphant Naraku stood behind the newly beheaded Sesshoumaru. The empty body slumped forward, still gripping Kagome’s broken body. The young woman screamed as the corpse of the Lord of the Western Lands covered her almost protectively. All her wounds seemed a thousand times worse and she could not get to the bow and arrows strapped to her back. Suddenly, the weight that had been crushing her was thrown aside. She gulped down air, coughing uncontrollably. Blood was pouring out of her mouth and nose. Before she could gain her composure, however, the embodiment of everything that had tortured her and her friends loomed above her, a sinister smile plastered on his face.

“Naraku,” she spat, her eyes cold. The man before her was wilder than she had ever seen him, his normal grace and silky arrogance rapidly disappearing beneath layers of blood-lust and the corrupted power of the completed Shikon no Tama he now had somewhere inside of him.

He was too far gone to answer her. He raised one clawed arm and began to swipe it downward when he stopped. He looked down at his stomach, dumbfounded. There, a small red orb was tearing its way out of the despicable creature. It flew to Kagome’s ready hand. A bright light seared through the entire area, temporarily rendering everyone unconscious for nearly a square mile. Everyone, that is, except for Kagome. She stared at her hand, newly bestowed with a small, circular burn. Her breaths came heavy and swift now. She knew she had little time left, and she was the only person on the battlefield still capable of killing Naraku. She painfully grabbed an arrow from the crushed quiver on her back and loosened the bow from underneath herself. Laboriously, she drew the string, the warm wood creaking ominously over the otherwise-silent rocks.

“Goodbye, Naraku,” she panted, and released her grip with a resounding twang. The arrow had less than half a foot to fly and there was considerable strength in its loosing. It hit him squarely in his heart, killing him instantly.

Kagome slumped back, her last strength gone. “I did it,” she murmured. “It’s over.” Her eyes slipped closed as she fell into blackness, a small smile gracing her bloodied lips for the first time in nearly a week. She was done; she could die now, and forever rest in peace.

Oh, how wrong she was.
