There's something very reminiscent of the Cowboy Junkies album, Miles from Our Home (1998, Geffen) about Vagabond Lovers. They're gutsy enough to be compared to 90's folk rock stadium bands Counting Crows and Train, and elegant enough to appeal to the arty underground cliques. Patty Spiglanin's voice could easilly be compared to Margo Timmins, low, heavenly and rich. They are a wonderful new band, having dealt forth an excellent debut album and brimming with potential. Initially springing from a band known as the Naked Barbies, Vagabond Lovers came together comprised of Evan Eutis (bass), Dan Lashkoff (drums), Patty Spiglannin (vocals/guitars), Michael Zapruder (lead guitar) and Mike Conner (keyboards). After releasing a number of small records they signed to Monarch (originally set up as an indie jazz label). The relationship would prove fruitful, resulting in the powerful debut When I Was You (2000, Monarch). Produced by Dave McNair, the album is the stuff of bluesy melodies, bass-heavy rhythms and intelligtent, lamenting lyrics. "Midnight Radio" is a slow-steady blues tune painting a portrait of a disc-jockey 'spinning records all night long/while the rain clouds hide the moon' and "Drive" (A Cars' cover) is a falling, cascading lullaby whispered under breathy vocals. The standout track is without question "Junkie", a supple melody propelled by warm guitar hooks and a steady, bluesy rhythm. It's an early point in this band's life, and I'm convinced a colorful future lays ahead.
