Making their own LUXX

"...New York's Luxx did something almost unheard of. It walked away from a deal...the band decided things weren't working out, so the unit went the harder do-it-yourself route..."With this album [hydroponic], we knew what we wanted and it was a different set of circumstances," says guitarist Ian Hatton...

The band's sound mixes rock, hard-care and alternative. It's not easily categorized, as it incorporates elements of acoustic rock, metal, and the blues as well. "I've always been involved in bands where there's been a wide mixture of influences," Hatton says. "It brings a much more interesting sound to the band if it gels together."

Chester's vocals, which range from whispers to screams, also define Luxx's sound. She promises mothing; she only offers her view on life. "I've kept a diary since my father died. I find that writing about it--how cliche this sounds--I feel like a tiny piece of me heals each time I write something," Chester says. "(But) I have a hard time singing it sometimes, I do feel that healing, but when I go to sing it I (sometimes) wish I never wrote it."

Chester says she frequently is comared to female singers such as Alanis Morisette, Janis Joplin and Meredith Brooks, but she doesn't buy into the strong-woman-as-shrew stereotype.

"It's so typical. The moment a female takes a position of strength--you know they say you are (a shrew) if you are assertive or aggressive--we've been dealing with it since high school," Chester says. "Everybody has their own individuality. I like a lot of artists, but none just because they're a woman. Like me because my band is great or (because) I write good lyrics or good songs, but not because I'm in a female-fronted band..."

The band is looking forward. As Hatton says, "Now, we're in a good position to get a good deal. Our management is feeling out offers for us now, basically, but it's something we don't want to rush into and don't need to at this point. We need to be back on a label but in not such a vulnerable position." "
