FREE SURANGA TENNAKOON
Protest at the GPO, cnr Bourke and Elizabeth Streets, Melbourne
Date: 16 March
Time: 4:30pm
Suranga Tennakoon was a key witness to the death of Viliami Tanginoa in Maribyrnong Detention Centre on 22 December 2000. After he tried to speak out for justice for Viliami, he was himself victimised and is still being victimised - he was transferred to Melbourne Assessment Prison on 21 January 2001, and from there to Port Phillip Prison.
He will be held there indefinitely without charges. The Department of Immigration have not seen Suranga since they transferred him.
The Refugee Action Collective has called a protest in solidarity with Suranga, against his imprisonment within the criminal system. Detaining refugees in prisons is the logical extension of the policy of mandatory detention, itself a cruel and racist tool used to deter those fleeing persecution from coming to Australia.
