Unwritten Law Music in High Places MTV/Earth Escapes Taking the "Unplugged" idea in a different direction, MTV's Music in High Places series brings popular artists to visually stimulating outdoor sites for acoustic performances. Unwritten Law recorded in Yellowstone Park, and the audio became this album (except for track 11, "Shallow", which was recorded in studio). This live disc stands strongly, even without the moving images. It begins with some fine renditions of "Before I Go", "Rest Of My Life", "Seein Red", and "Up All Night". The usual large, shouted chorus of "Seein Red" is replaced by a softer, slower, and lower version that is initially quite surprising and hard to digest, but ultimately works and defines the feel of the entire album. Unwritten Law could be playing in your small living room next to the fire place, but their songs are now further inspired by spacious skies and purple mountains' majesty. Otgher standout tracks include "Cailin", "Elva", and the acoustic studio track, "Shallow". After the recent success of their last album (Elva), this is a very nice way to add new perspective to their writing in preparation for a follow-up. A must-have for fans, but those new to Unwritten Lawmay be better off getting their earlier, more pop-punk recordings.
