What Is Reggaeton? :
Since the internationalization of Reggaeton in late 2004, alot of theories have arisen as to what exactly Reggaeton is. Hundreds of tales have been told , but none nearly accurate.
Reggaeton which was originally known as "El UnderGround" or simply Spanish Rap/Reggae, came to be in the late 80s with artists such as Vico C and Brewly MC leading the way. The Underground movement was prohibited by society and considered a plague or rather, the worst form of expression from the underworld. "Beef" a.k.a "Tiraera" as it is known in the Reggaeton world, was one of the reasons why the musical genre was considered vulgar and was not categorized as a real musical genre amongst others of international fame.
Many of today's Reggaeton followers, believe Reggaeton commenced in Panama which is not entirely true. Spanish Reggae, commenced in Panama, however Reggaeton did not. Puerto Rican Rappers who make up almost all of the artists in Reggaeton, were influenced by the music from Panama, however with the influence, they improvised and made spanish reggae their own thing.
Productions such as The Noise, La Industria and Playero, all provided platforms for Reggaeton artists. Artists such as Daddy Yankee, Polaco y Lito, Baby Rasta y Gringo, MC Ceja, Master Joe, O.G Black, Las Guanabanas, Ivy Queen and even Mackie Ranks all got their starts in either of the productions.
DJ Playero, DJ Eric(La Industria), DJ Negro(The Noise), Ruben DJ, DJ Stefano and DJ Nelson(Flow Music) each played a huge part in exposing Reggaeton to different audiences. These DJ's gave their most valient efforts in attempts to internationalize reggaeton in the 90s by mixing Reggaeton beats with Techno, Dancehall and even Hip-Hop. Sadly their efforts came up short, but it did not stop them from continuing on and growing as musicians and ultimately the Legends and Pioneers of Reggaeton.
In 1998, Don Chezina, who is recognized for his hit "Tra,Tra,Tra", christened The Under Ground Rap & Reggae - Reggaeton in his song "Chezi-dom" in one of his most famous phrases (Reggae-Ton,Reggae-tine). After the song was released and became a huge hit in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, Artists alike and the general audience began to refer to the musical genre as Reggaeton.
The first artists to receive major record deals were Ivy Queen, Tempo and Buddhas Family who all signed to Sony Music in the late 90s, Vico C who signed to EMI and Point Breakers who signed to Universal Music.
Today, artists such as N.O.R.E, Nina Sky, Pitbull and Fat Joe are considered Reggaeton artists by fans who recently started listening to the music from 2004 on-wards, however that is not the case. Although N.O.R.E, Nina Sky, Pitbull and Fat Joe have collaborated on Reggaeton tracks and were a determining factor in the mainstream appeal of Reggaeton, these artists do not pertain to the musical genre. As hispanic artists, they seek other methods of continuing on with their success outside of the American Hip/Hop & R&B market and if there's money to be made, rest assured, these artists will be on board.
In 2006, Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Wisin y Yandel, Ivy Queen, Hector El Father, Voltio & Tito El Bambino represent Reggaeton in the International Market as the most famous and stand out acts of the genre. The artists, all from the Old School of Reggaeton, have maintained and struggled to make it the top and their hardwork has certainly payed off. |
