Chapter Five: Healing

Kamui sat in a dark room, lying impeccably still on his bed, his neck and shoulders bandaged up. His violet eyes were sorrowful but resigned. After the collapse of several other buildings in Tokyo unrelated to the seven barriers, he had been unable to find Fuuma’s body. Kakyou was found dead at the base of the Chi no Ryu’s base, a gentle smile on his face. Satsuki had been found badly injured when Beast went on the fritz and killed Yuuto. With the last of her strength, she destroyed the computer in the hopes of getting it to kill her too, but her plan had not worked. She now lay in coma in a hospital, doctors sure that she would wake up if given enough time to recover. Nataku had disappeared without a trace, but the other Seals knew he was alive someone because they could literally *feel* emotions rolling off the android as it watched the shinken plunge into Fuuma’s body. Seishirou was gone as well, but was certainly still alive, surviving as he did being an assassin. And as for Kanoe, she had taken her sister Hinoto and moved away from Tokyo. They had both lost their dreamseer skills and were now normal women.

Kamui looked outside his window, barely titling his head to do so. He was happy that all the Seals had survived. They were preparing to return to their respective homes, but were unsure of leaving Kamui in his current catatonic mood. The president of the Clamp Campus Academy offered an open ended invitation to the younger Seals in case any of them decided to remain in Tokyo, but he had not gotten any offers. Seiichirou had returned to his home, only to be served with divorce papers by his wife. Karen, being fond of Seiichirou kept her eye on the man that was close to her heart. As for Subaru…

The door to Subaru’s room opened and the spiritualist entered the room. His lover hadn’t spoken since they had brought him back from the bloody battle only a week ago.

“Kamui…this…” Subaru spoke, as he lay down next to Kamui, wrapping the boy up in his arms. Kamui’s eyes closed and hot tears leaked out.

“It came true Subaru-kun. Fuuma came back. But he was so hurt, so…and he chose to die for me.” Kamui spoke through sobs, holding on tightly to Subaru, the onmyouji holding the shaking boy.

“You wanted him to live…it was impossible under the circumstances Kamui-chan. The fact that he was able to come back shows how determined you both were to live. I’m sorry that he died Kamui. But if he hadn’t, none of us would be here now. Today *is* the Promised Day you know. I can feel it deep within me.” Subaru spoke as he brushed strands of dark hair from Kamui’s now opened eyes.

“Will you go back to him…to the man who hurt you for so long?” Kamui spoke as he twined his fingers with his lover’s. Subaru looked away. Kamui nodded. “You still love him?” Kamui asked, knowingly fully well what the answer was.

“I still do, but the love that grows between us is chasing that dark phantom away. I should have realized so long ago that my obsession with him was not healthy. It will take time for me to let go of my grief Kamui…but if you are willing to help me, I’ll be devoted to you.” Subaru spoke softly, his one emerald eye gleaming with emotion. Kamui threw his arms around Subaru’s shoulders and sobbed into them, wishing that his tears could stop the pain.

In a hospital bed not far from Tokyo Tower, Satsuki sat upright in her bed, coughing violently as her heart jump started. Only a moment later did doctors run into her room, checking up on her vital signs.

“Ms, you have awoken from a week long coma. Is there anything that you can remember?” one of the doctors asked as he shone a penlight into Satsuki’s eyes. Tears filled her eyes as Yuuto’s dead body flashed through her mind.

“I am Satsuki Yatouji.” Satsuki whispered, her voice hoarse from lack of use.

“We’re keeping you here for a few more days for observation, now please, rest.” One of the doctors spoke as a nurse eased her back into her bed. Another nurse gave Satsuki a mild sedative, and soon the girl was asleep, her dreams formless. The doctors left the room, running into a schoolgirl outside Satsuki’s room.

“Is she okay?” the girl asked as she tried to wipe away the tears that had been streaming down her cheeks.

“Yes, Ms.Nekoi, it seems that she has returned to the land of the living. You can see how now if you wish, but only for a few moments.” One of the doctors spoke as he let Yuzuriha enter the room. Inuki shut the door behind his master and the girl collapsed into the chair in a fit of tears as she saw Satsuki sleeping peacefully. Kusanagi was right. I was sad when I thought you were dead. But you’re not anymore, so I can finally answer your question.

Nataku walked into the hospital that Satsuki currently was in, carrying a body in his arms, tears running down his cheeks as he walked into the emergency room.

“Someone, please help me!” he called out. A nurse ran up to him, her eyes shocked to see that Nataku was carrying a boy no younger than seventeen, blood staining his clothes and a rather large hole in his chest. “You have to help please.” Nataku pleaded as he held Fuuma’s body closer to him. The nurse nodded and called out for help to the other staff. They took the boy from Nataku’s arms and the first nurse lead him away to a waiting room while the boy that he had brought in was rushed into surgery. They had detected a faint heartbeat and were soon working on bringing the boy back to life.

“Young man, do you know who that boy is? We need to notify his family to tell them that he’s here.” The nurse spoke as she gave Nataku a cup of cold water. The android nodded.

“His name is Monou Fuuma, but he has no family left.” Nataku spoke softly. The nurse nodded.

“Let’s hope for the best for your friend okay?” the nurse spoke as she tried to smile. Nataku simply nodded, and for the first time since the last fight, closed his eyes in sleep.

At sunset, Fuuma was wheeled out of surgery into an intensive care unit. Various tubes were attached to his body. As the doctors had worked on him, they had also noted that the boy had been abused as evidenced from the bruises that were slowly fading from his body. And his body also showed signs of starvation and imprisonment. This they could tell from the darker bruises around Fuuma’s wrists. They had all decided that whatever hell the boy had been through, he was lucky to be alive. They informed Nataku of Fuuma’s state and the android asked to able to watch his friend since there was no one else. They nodded their consent and Nataku sat in the chair beside Fuuma’s bed, watching every shallow rise and fall of Fuuma’s chest.

Yuzuriha walked about the hospital the next morning. She had just come back from home where she had taken a shower and some clothes for Satsuki, along with some pocky. As she walked into the hospital, greeting the staff who knew her well by now, she was shocked as she saw Nataku walking into the intensive care unit. She followed the android and as she swung the door open, her packets of pocky fell to the floor. Nataku was holding a boy’s hand, stroking it lovingly, whispering words to the sleeping boy. It was none other than Fuuma, and Yuzuriha gave a squeak as she ran out. She had to let Kamui know that his friend was somehow alive!

“Kamui!” Sorata called as he ran to Kamui’s door, knocking on it with so much force that it startled its occupant. A sleepy Kamui opened the door and he looked up at Sorata.

“What is it Sorata-kun?” Kamui asked as he opened the door wider.

“Yuzu-chan just called from the hospital. She says that she saw Fuuma at the hospital where Satsuki is. He’s alive Kamui!” Sorata spoke as he shook Kamui by his shoulders. Kamui’s violet eyes widened as his mouth fell open. Fuuma…he’s…alive? Gods.

“I have to see him.” Kamui murmured as he walked back into his room as if in a daze.

“Yuzu-chan said that he’s asleep, and she doesn’t know if he’s in a coma like Satsuki was.” Sorata spoke gently.

“It doesn’t matter Sorata,” Kaumi spoke as he turned to face the lightning master, tears filling his eyes, “he’s alive!”

Fuuma’s dreams were formless as he tried to force himself to wake up. After the dragons had dragged him off, he had felt his soul freed of the confines of being Kamui’s Twin star. He felt the forces around him seemed to offer him comfort as he saw his mother, father and Kotori wishing and willing him to live on without them. He had then awoken, with a terrifying pain in his chest and all over his body. He had been buried under tons of rumble and he felt the rumble shifting under him, light pouring over him as Nataku’s face appeared. The android was crying as he lifted Fuuma out, burying his face into the crook of Fuuma’s neck.

“I knew you were here. I sensed it. Something led me to you.” Nataku spoke as he clutched Fuuma’s prone body. Fuuma’s eyes barely opened, but tears fell from them and it was then that Nataku got as quickly as he could to the hospital. Fuuma could hear the beeping of a heart monitor somewhere near his head, and as he opened his eyes to see, his vision was greeted by a honey coloured orb, and a smile upon a man’s face.

“Sei?” Fuuma spoke softly, his throat raw from disuse. The assassin smiled, and deep in Fuuma’s heart, he felt himself blushing.

“Don’t speak Fuuma. The Tree told me that you were back among the living. I realized that this is the first time that I’ve truly spoken to you. I’m not here to harm you. I’m just glad that you’re alive. So is Nataku.” Seishirou as he noted the android that was at Fuuma’s other side, still clutching his hand. Fuuma gave the android’s hand a friendly squeeze, his golden eyes communicating words of thanks and gratitude.

“Is everyone okay?” Fuuma asked as he tried to sit up. Seishirou’s strong hands stopped him from moving.

“You’ll know in a few moments. Nataku and I are not the only ones that know that you’re alive.” Seishirou spoke as turned towards the door as it opened.

“Fuuma!” Kamui cried as he ran in, tears in his violet eyes. He moved to hug Fuuma, but Nataku stopped him.

“He’s too injured for that.” Nataku spoke as it looked ready to defend Fuuma if necessary.

“Seishirou.” Subaru spoke from the doorway as Arashi, Yuzuriha and Sorata entered the room after Kamui.

“Subaru, nice to see you again.” Seishirou spoke. He took one last look at Fuuma and left the room. Subaru followed him out until they were outside the hospital. The two lit up cigarettes, and Subaru spoke first.

“I am no longer your prey for I no longer carry your mark; and I will not let you own me ever again.” Subaru spoke as he stared at Seishirou. The assassin exhaled, his eyes set on the night sky.

“I know. When that boy died, he destroyed so many things that held people captive in sorrow. But I can’t go back to you, you know that Subaru. It is better this way. You have Kamui now, and he has brought the green back to your eye. I am grateful for that.” Seishirou spoke sincerely.

“Just answer one question…did you ever love me?” Subaru asked, his voice sounding incredibly young.

“I always did, but I wasn’t ready to die yet, ready to have you take my place because that is what would have happened if you had killed me.” Seishirou replied. Subaru nodded, and part of his heart felt better.

“Thank you for that gift Seishirou.” Subaru spoke as he leaned against the older man, Seishirou smiling as he hugged Subaru.

“If I keep my job longer, I consider that a good thing.” Seishirou spoke as he tried to dispel the heavy atmosphere that had set upon them.

“What about that boy Fuuma? I was sure that the Dark Kamui would have used his innocence to seduce you.” Subaru spoke as snubbed out his cigarette.

“To be honest, I’m sure it happened. It would explain the first night that I spent with him, but I don’t think I’ll be interested in pursing him. He’s still young.” Seishirou replied as he too snubbed out his cigarette. Subaru smiled, as he turned to walk about into the hospital.

“That never stopped you before.” Subaru replied as he walked back into the hospital, leaving Seishirou to the cool night air. The assassin coughed as he walked away. The look of those golden eyes back in the hospital room were filled with sadness, shame and hope and it had stirred something in Seishirou that he squashed it to the back of his heart. He didn’t want to see Fuuma and get to know the real him. It would be all too painful.

*****

It was late into the night and all the Seals had left except for Yuzuriha whom had found her way back to Satsuki’s room as the girl awoke. Yuzuriha had cried as she hugged the startled girl and she gushed excitedly about all that happened. Satsuki was grateful and Yuzuriha had left her pocky to eat as she went home, glad that the former chi no ryu was better now. Kamui remained at Fuuma’s side, listening as Fuuma relayed what he saw when he died. As he mentioned the part about his family, Fuuma’s eyes welled with tears.

“I killed her Kamui. I killed Kotori. I’m so sorry, I should have fought harder. If I been strong enough Kotori would still be here.” Fuuma spoke as he clenched his fingers tightly, imaging his sister’s blood on his hands.

“Fuuma, she chose to die to protect us, please don’t be upset. I’m sure that Kotori is better off now, because she’s whole again.” Kamui spoke as he smiled at Fuuma, nothing but understanding in his eyes. Fuuma nodded, but still blamed himself.

“And Daisuke, I’m sorry about him, and for blinding Subaru.” Fuuma whispered as he bit his lip.

“It’s okay Fuuma. I know it’s hard, but you’ll get through it. I’ll be here to help you, because Dark Kamui was also a part of me too.” Kamui spoke as he squeezed Fuuma’s hand reassuringly. Fuuma nodded and squeezed back. There was a knock at the door and a nurse poked he head in.

“Visiting hours are over.” She spoke as she shut the door. Kamui rose to leave.

“I’ll be back again to see you, okay Fuuma?” Kamui spoke as he waved good bye.

“Goodnight Kamui.” Fuuma replied as he smiled. Kamui left and shut the door and Fuuma lay back against his bed. His heart ached a bit, but not because of Kamui, at least, not anymore.

“Fuuma?” Nataku spoke as he sat on Fuuma’s bed.

“Yes Nataku?” Fuuma answered as the android stared at him.

“I have nowhere to go.” Nataku spoke softly.

“You can stay with me…I have no one left too.” Fuuma replied, forcing down the wave of sadness and loneliness that welled up within him. Nataku lay in the bed next to Fuuma and held him close to him.

“Fuuma…I’m glad that you wanted to save me. I wished that I could be human, and it came true. I can feel things now.” Nataku spoke softly into Fuuma’s ear. Fuuma shuddered at the Nataku’s warm breath tickled his ear.

“I’m glad that you got what you wanted.” Fuuma replied as he relaxed into Nataku’s embrace.

“What did you wish for other than Kamui’s safety?” Nataku asked as he noted that Fuuma’s eyes were slowly closing.

“To find love again…” Fuuma replied as he fell asleep, his dreams filled with a sakura petal plain, and warm, strong arms holding him as Seishirou kissed him.
