Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai On The Tunes That Made Him a Man!
Song to Drive Down to Glastonbury:
'Cold Blooded Old Times' - Smog
"You can get a real good singalong going with this one. It's a real rocker. I often find myself singing it with my large, circular friends. They all love it."
Song to Play at Dusk:
'V' - Labradford
"Dominic (Aitchison, Mogwai bassist) and I had a really nice evening in Spain listening to this. We were just sitting on the veranda of our hotel talking shite. It was beautiful."
Song to Talk Someone Down To:
'Then She Did...' - Jane's Addiction
"This has happened to me once, but in situations like that people tend not not want to hear any music at all, certainly nothing trippy or with big delays between the drums. You need something straight down the line. 'Then She Did...' is a wonderful song that would be appreciated by anybody in a tender frame of mind or body."
Song That Reminds You Of Your First Festival:
'He's Got The Whole World In his Hands' - Sisters of Mercy
"I went to Reading in 1991, the year that punk broke. I could pick some classic grunge anthem, but I won't. Can I mention that Sisters of Mercy played 'He's Got The Whole World In his Hands' when they closed the festival? That was brilliant."
Song To Psyche Yourself Up For The Stage:
'I Wanna Be Your Dog' - The Stooges
"It's got to be metal, hasn't it? Guns N' Roses' 'Welcome To The Jungle' is pretty good, but maybe I should pick something cooler. 'I Wanna Be Your Dog', that's a stormer. I saw The Yummy Fur do a great version of it the other night, you know."
Countryside Record:
'Ohio River Boat Song' - Palace Brothers
"I live in the countryside. I can see a cow from here. I love a bit of peace and quiet, I like animals, trees, rivers, various things. My favourite animal is a monkey. They're funny, they look like wee hairy men. A record? Some Palace Brothers maybe, their first single is pretty rural."
Song To Stop The Rain:
'Girl/Boy' - Aphex Twin
"I think the rain might be scared by the very fast junglist drums."
Song For The Summer:
'Higher Than The Sun' - Primal Scream
"As you can imagine, my record collection is chock-a-block with summer anthems. I bought Primal Scream's 'Higher Than The Sun' the day it came out, though. Was I higher than the sun? Probably not... oh, actually I was, but I'm not going to talk about it. I was only 14. I went to see them on tour and they were outrageously good. That's probably the best single released this decade. Then they released that rubbish album that sounded like The Rolling Stones."
Song That Makes You Homesick:
'Over The Ocean' - Low
"They played with us on our recent European tour. When they did that song it made me cry a bit. I always cry when I see Low, though."
Song To Greet The Dawn:
'Here' - Pavement
"You can't really mess with this tune. It's definitely a good full stop. Have I heard the Tindersticks' version? Yes, I have, but it's not so good. You should only do a cover version if you think you can do it better."
Ideal Glastonbury Band:
"Obviously on guitar, Jimi Hendrix. He's rocking the lead. He's not singing, that wasn't one of his strong points. I reckon on drums, we've got to have Stephen Morris from Joy Division. I think his robotic style would rebound quite well off Jimi's crazy psyche-blues. Bass-wise, it's got to be John Cale. He's pretty cool in his book. I'd have two singers: Nick Drake and Kurt Cobain. They're both dead. I think people would be surprised to see them. Oh, we need another guitarist to keep Jimi from getting out of line. How about David Pajo from Ariel M. Actually, it'd be rubbish, wouldn't it? It might work though, if Nick and Kurt had to dress up like Kriss Kross."
Song For Driving Away From the Festival:
'Warsaw' - David Bowie
"This is my favourite tune. I always play it in the car. I don't really like summer anthems."
Best Festival Show You've Seen:
The Cramps In Spain
"It was the most unbelievable rock show of all time. (Their singer) Lux pulled down the entire PA and crawled under all the wires and became a sort of wire monster. Their drummer was playing with bones. Lux pulled (guitarist) Poison Ivy's shoes off during their 20-minute version of 'Do The Bird' and started sniffing them."
