USA Independant Wrestling

Straight Shootin

By Carmine Sabia

For those of you who don’t know me I am Carmine "C.J." Sabia and I am the owner of Stars & Stripes Championship Wrestling in NJ. What I will be doing once a week here on usaindy.com is giving you the fans, workers, and the clueless a little insight into how a promotion is run. The ins, outs, ups and downs of the wrestling business from the inside. I will be outspoken, harsh, fair, but most importantly truthful. Everything you will read from me on the site will not be worked in any way. The following is a straight shoot.

You know being from New Jersey it seems that every time I begin typing I have a little trouble thinking of a topic. It’s not that there aren’t any. It’s more like "where to begin". This state is a mess plain and simple. You have this promotion fighting with that promotion, this worker won’t work with that worker. Sometimes I want to get everyone in a padded room and tell them to play nice. It feel like being on the playground in grade school. And here’s the real kicker of it all. Because of all the bickering almost no one is getting good draws. See the thinking goes a little something like this - "Hey my rival promotion is running on Saturday guess I should run too". No stupid. No you should NOT. Now the fans are torn and both of you lose money.

But it’s all about ego folks. Always has been and always will be. This is a business but it is not treated as such. And it all stems from promoters believing their own press. Our company is this, our company is that. We guarantee this, we promise that. Our workers are the best in the blah blah blah. Take Joe Schmo fan to 2 indy shows run by 2 promoters that hate each other and ask him to point out as little as 4 differences. Bet he can’t. Know why? Cause we are all selling the same damn product. Coke and Pepsi, Sprite and 7-Up, a hooker and a porn star. It’s all semantics. And it’s all egos.

I believe very strongly in my promotion SSCW, and I truly feel it is one of the best in the area. However there are several very good promotions right here in NJ that I think fans would want to see as well. PCW, IHPW, JCW, JAPW and ECPW just to name a few offer a good variety for the average fan. Each has it’s own strengths and weaknesses. But if we all worked together a little more I think as a whole we would have more strength. Will that ever happen? I doubt it but I sure hope so. I sure do hope common sense breaks through at some point.

I would not come on here and use this forum to trash 1 company. Really what I am doing is stating a fact. Not about 1 company but about an industry.. The things I have stated here are things we are ALL guilty of. I include myself in this assessment. But I think we can all work together for the good of the business itself. If not for us then for the fans. Because if we don’t there won’t be indy wrestling worth watching in NJ anymore.

Next week I am going to discuss how a show is put together from day 1 up until ShowTime. If there are any questions in particular that you would like answered please feel free to email me.
