In the old city of varanasi the traffic is very interesting with all of the bicycle-rickshaws, shoppers, merchants and religious pilgrims.
When going to the Ghats, you can travel by autorickshaw or cab only up to a certain point. Beyond that you can only hire bicycle rickshaws to take you further.
Cows are quite common in Varanasi and traffic just works around them.
About a block or two from the main ghats, the bicycle rickshaws can proceed no further and you must walk the rest of the way to the river. During Hindu festivals the crowds going down the roads to bathe in the Ganges can be massive.
