January 2003

I've always known that it's possible to train rabbits, but never have really thought about trying it seriously. Rabbits can be house-trained, for instance (so I'm told) but that seems more of an extension of their natural desire to keep their living quarters clean. Both Zander and Fergus wait to be let out in the mornings before relieving themselves on the lawn - they utterly refuse to 'wet the bed', so to speak.

But last week I read an article on the natural intelligence of rabbits that (not surprisingly ;) said rabbits are smart enough to learn basic commands such as 'come'. Even though I didn't agree with some of the things said in the article, I did think it was possible that my boys could have such learning potential, so for the past few days I've been attempting to teach Zander and Fergus to stand on their hind legs when I say "Up!", using food rewards.

So far it has gone well. Both boys caught on very quickly, and were very motivated by the fruit jellies we gave them as tiny rewards. After a week of daily training I can report that Zander will successfully stand up on his hind legs when we approach him with a treat! He will not do it when we say "Up" though. Fergus has not been as interested. He will not stand up at all (but has become very skillful in sneaking treats out of my hand!)
