The
marching band memorizing their music
*
The
elementary marching band played drum cadences and music
arranged
by the director. Music memorization of two marching
tunes
began during the last quarterof the regular school year.
Final
memorization occurred during the first two weeks of summer
band.
Students performed cadences and both tunes, from memory,
for
the teacher prior to marching in summer parades.

Band
practices for the elementary marching band were held Monday through
Thursday
at 7:30 a.m., in the Gering Junior High Music Complex for a period
of
five weeks. The band rehearsed 75-90 minutes each day. Optional sectionals
were
held at 7:00 a.m. In addition, private lessons were available to
interested
students.
*
The
elementary marching band was led by two drum majors in street
practices
and performances. Students interested in being selected
to
these positions rehearsed at the jr.high immediately following
band
practices. Prospective drum majors were instructed in
"street
commands" necessary to lead the band. Practices were held for
two
weeks with drum major selections being held at the conclusion
of
the final practice.

Drum Major Class
*
During
the first two weeks of summer band, students not only memorized
all
marching music and drum cadences, they also learned basic marching
fundamentals,
practicing these in the band room. Emphasis was given to
marching
in step, size and style of step, body and instrument carriage,
uniformity,
getting instruments up and down with precision, and
learning
all "street commands."
*
The
third week of summer band the students took their knowledge to the
streets
and began preparing to march and play in the community summer
parades.
Additional attention was given to straight ranks, files and diagonals.
The
banner was added to the band during the last practices of the band.

The
Gering Elementary Band performed in the annual Kiddie Parade
and
the Oregon Trail Days Celebration Parade for more than 25
consecutive
years. Uniforms and music changed over the years.
However,
the dedication and desire for excellence by the band members
remained
exemplary throughout those years. The lessons learned regarding
teamwork,
responsibility, self-reliance, self-discipline, and respect for friends
and
community will be lasting and ever present in their daily lives.
