Yeah .... some of my favorite Fiona lyrics are kinda harsh and bitter, but there's some very beautiful music & lyrics too and to put it in Paula Abdul's words "there's a beautiful tone to her voice"!!!!

• I'm not into censorship or anything but I just noticed a double standard. As soon as Jay Z releases a CD, people are quick to stick an "Explicit Lyrics" sticker on his music ..... I thought if an album has ANY profanity, it gets the sticker .... if this was the case, Fiona should get the sticker
• Commentary: so why does this Black girl [me] listen to Fiona Apple? Well, I know a lot of people criticized her videos as very Lolita-ish, and her looks as 'waif" and maybe anorexic ... whatever.. Her very first video was nothing like any of that Hollywood imagery.. I think the vid was "Shadowboxer." Very simple, just Fiona behind the piano, and in the recording studio (headphones and all). I think it was even in black and white ... The video was rarely seen and rarely played, and got no radio airplay. Plus, maybe the article in Vibe magazine also had me curious about this new artist. Hey if Vibe thought this blue-eyed girl was cool .... plus I loved her sob story told in every mag article. Whatever the reasons, I'm glad I picked up the first masterpiece: Tidal. An outstanding first effort.

Alana Davis does a cover of Ani DeFranco's "32 Flavors" ... when I had MTV (those were the days) there was a short-lived show [I think it was called] 13 angry viewers ... some sort of video jury, so I saw Davis' video for 32 Flavors and someone said that she sounded like "she swallowed her tounge" .... but that wasn't enough to stop me from buying the cassette, I don't know why I decided to buy the cassette but I'm glad I did, if I knew I'd like it as much as I do I would have brought the CD (so I guess the critic did have some influence on my buying decision) .... anyway I love the lyrics for 32 Flavors (By the way this was the only song borrowed for her 1st album ... she's a true artist:
