I took my last final exam for the year today.
In my first year of college,
I’ve learned more than I have throughout the entire span of my life.
I’ve learned how to hit the snooze button for two hours.
I’ve learned how to talk to six different people on the computer at one time.
I’ve learned how to clean up a friend’s carpet after a “night of too much fun”
I’ve learned how to stop when I don’t know my limits.
I’ve learned how to help a friend get professional help when I can’t handle the task anymore.
I’ve learned how to love two people who hate each other.
I’ve learned how to hug
And when to hug.
I’ve learned when to ask, “What’s wrong?”
And when to just say, “I’m here if you need me.”
I’ve learned when to fight
And when to just walk away.
I’ve learned that there are some friends who you can love
But just can’t trust.
I’ve learned that I really am worth more than a designer name or a clothes size.
I’ve learned that numbers aren’t everything.
I’ve learned that my life is what I make it
And that I can try to “grow up” too fast
Or try to avoid responsibility too long
Or I can just let things happen
And know it’ll all work out in the end
I’ve learned what life is like
Without the constant protection
Of my mother’s wing.
I’ve always known what love is
But I’ve learned its importance in getting through life.
