As my mind drifted off
Into unconscious territory
You said goodnight
I pulled my body close to you
And smiled
But before succumbing to sleep
You spoke again
And clearing my ears
As well as my brain
I revealed my surprise at your words
My heart stopped
And then leapt
At the realization
Of a dream coming true
I was flooded with emotion
And even now
I sit in the early morning hour
Marveling at the astounding complexity
Of those simple words…
I love you.
