Title - Sega Dreamcast
Alternative title(s) - N/A
What will I remember Sega for? I will remember Sega for Sonic, the Mega Drive, the Saturn, Sakura Taisen, and of course, the Dreamcast as well as a bunch of other stuff, especially their horrible American branch. Yeah, I didn't want to throw in their American branch, but oh well.
Unlike any system out there, both Japan and America got the Dreamcast in 1999. Make that 9/9/99 to be exact. This was the first time a console had been released in Japan and in America at the same time. Of course, you know the rest of the story from there.
Like the past Sega systems, the Dreamcast did not do well in America. As always, you have Sony's Playstation and the Playstation 2 doing well in both Japan and America and you can thank the American branch for doing bad tasks again. The Dreamcast was released too early, like a year too early at least and the Saturn never got much of a chance to grow even though I thought the Saturn did grow at a quick rate.
Fun - 10
I really had fun on this system. We have "Sonic Adventures I" & "II". A lot of the games are perfect ports of the arcade games. We have the same Sega feel. So, what's not to like about this system?
That statement, "We have the same Sega feel," is the part I don't like about the system. Yes, I know I will still have the same Sega fun, but Sega heavily relies on action and sports games to keep their systems going. The Dreamcast's library is not as diverse as I wanted it to be. Even if the role playing games here are good, you don't see much of them. Still, at least the library does have a degree of diversity. It's not a high degree, but it still has some diversity.
Go ahead and capture those stones in the "Power Stone" games. After that, you can go ahead and beat up a student or a sensei or any other staff memeber in "Moero! Justice Gakuen". Want some speed? Go and play the "Sonic Adventure" games. Want some fantasy adventure? Play "Evolution I" or "II" or "Grandia I" or "II" or maybe "Phantasy Star Online". These games, as well as "Denn Senki Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram", "Soul Calibur", "Shenmue", and so much more are reasons that make the system so fun.
I better do my usual routine of saying games that were never released outside of Japan. Well, there are games like "Shenmue II", though some places outside of Japan did get the sequel, but not America, some "Memories Off" games, the "King of Fighters" games released after 2000, "Guilty Gear X", various "Sakura Taisen" games including some, if not, all of the Saturn ones, some "Sentimental Graffiti" games, "Kanon", "Air", "Happy Lesson", some "Pia Carrot" games, "Nakoruru: Anohito Kara no Okurimono" and so much more. Wow! That is a long list.
Life - 10
I really had so much fun with this system and I still do. Why can't I say this with many systems now these days? Why?
Equipment - 9
The system is pretty durable. I love the look of the system. It's simple and it works rather well. For those who don't like getting multiple player adapters, there is no need because there are four control slots this time around.
The controller is not the best in the world, but at least it's better than some controllers out there are. Why did they drop the layout of the Saturn's controller? I don't know. You can play "Moero! Justice Gakuen" this way, but not "Street Fighter Zero III".
The rest of the equipment is fine. Just be careful on how you take care of the system, okay? Okay!
Audio - 10
I won't go much into here. The audio was fine. The voice acting was clear and not muffled. The music was great. The sound effects were right on the dot. Not many problems were in here.
Art - 10
Until the Playstation 2 came around, no other system produced games as glamorous as the games on the Dreamcast. They were as good as they can get. No one could have done it better.
Okay, there are errors here and there. That’s okay. They’re not that big of a deal.
Overall - 10
"I have a dream that one day, I will revive Sega!"
I wish! Now, just because the Dreamcast isn't talked about that much anymore, it doesn't mean that it's not talked about in Japan still. The Dreamcast is still alive and well there. If you want, buy a ticket, land in Narita or any other place in Japan, and have the time of your life.
The Sega Dreamcast was the last Sega system and it sure was a great one. Now, they're making games only. Yup, I really wanted to be hired by Sega of America.
+
The amount of fun, the art, the Dreamcast is definitely a winner in my book.
