Abstract

 

 

The Howard University Summer Transportation Institute program was held during the period June 24th to July 19th, 2002 in the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Computer Sciences on the main campus of Howard University.

Eighteen ninth and tenth grade students from the Washington DC metropolitan area participated in the program.

The participants were involved in a number of planned activities focused on:

a)    Broadening their knowledge of  the field of  transportation engineering,

b)    Sharpening their awareness of the diverse employment opportunities in the transportation  industry,

c)    The preparation needed  to become a transportation professional.

 

The program was primarily offered to students of the TransTech Academy at Cardozo Senior High School in NW Washington DC. A few students from nearby Maryland and Virginia suburbs also participated.

Dr Errol Noel, program director, spearheaded the STI Program at Howard. Dr Noel, who is an experienced transportation engineer, is the Chairman of Howard’s Civil Engineering Department. Dr Peter Keiller, who is also on the faculty at the university, filled the role of Associate Director. His practical experiences lie in the fields of Computer Science and Operations Research.

The program included stimulating activities involving lectures by guest speakers, English lessons, engineering projects, design projects involving teamwork, mathematics, statistical data analysis utilizing computer software tools, educational videos, and a number of field trips to airports, sea ports, highways, commuter rail, rapid rail and light rail systems in the Baltimore- Washington metropolitan area.
