ABILITY SCORE DESCRIPTIONS
The normal minimum and maximum scores for a human are shown in bold italics. Since a score of “10” is absolute average (statistically, the average is 10.5; thus 10-11 is the given average in the core rules), I have considered 9-11 to be completely average scores. The core rules provide less variation in their descriptions of the PC’s condition when any one of his scores reaches “0.” I think the options provided for here are a bit more “realistic.” In fact, the state of the PC when a score reaches “0” is about the only true use for this chart, but it might provide some interesting descriptions to the player who is struggling with what, exactly, a “15” Dexterity really means.
The normal range for humans is 3-18, with sub-normal being 1-2, and super-normal being 19-20. Beyond 20 is actually super-human, and below 1 is in some form non-human. For a completely geeky analysis of this, see my write-up in the Articles section.
A Strength score of 6 is required to walk, carrying one’s own weight.
A Dexterity score of 6 is required to accomplish basic feats of hand-eye coordination, like throwing a ball or tying a shoe.
A Constitution score of 6 is required to be free of constant illnesses and diseases.
An Intelligence score of 6 is required to read and write.
A Wisdom score of 6 is required to have an opinion and avoid being a complete lackey.
A Charisma score of 6 is required to have a social life of any degree, to have any friends and avoid being a total recluse.
A Comeliness score of 6 is required to avoid being “ugly.”
