PHOBIA CHART

The PC who begins with or contracts a phobia will experience lesser, intermediate, or debilitating dread when confronted with the thing feared, or even when the possibility of confrontation exists.  The role-playing opportunities with this are immense and should not be glossed over.  Some phobias present laughable situations while others are truly troublesome.

To handle a phobic character:  when a situation occurs that presents the thing feared (e.g. a cat walks in front of the PC with ailurophobia), the PC makes a Willpower check vs. DC 15 for lesser phobias, DC 22 for intermediate phobias, and DC 30 for debilitating phobias.  (How potent the phobia is depends on the situation when it developed, and generally is up to the DM.)  If the Will save succeeds, the character is able to shake the fear and press on as if normal.  However, if he fails, he is gripped by uncontrollable dread and angst, and will react irrationally to the situation at hand.  The player can work out the details of how the PC will react (crying, screaming, wetting pants, shaking, blanching white, freezing stiff, stuttering, running, rage, etc.), but the point is that the PC cannot control his fears, and he will attempt to avoid all further contact with the source of his fear.  No amount of logical discussion or persuasion will counter his phobia.  One hour after failing the Will save, the PC may try again, but a second failure almost assures that he will not proceed any farther.

A phobia may be “postponed” or overridden briefly with a remove fear spell, but this lasts only for the duration of the spell, after which the gripping fear returns.  The PC may make a second Will save after the duration ends.  Calm emotions does not override the phobia, but does settle the PC's mind, granting him a second saving throw immediately.  To remove a phobia entirely requires a heal, limited wish, wish or miracle.
