Interphase

Interphase is the stage between two successive cell divisions. It is the first stage in the cell cycle and comes before the four stages that make up mitosis. Up to ninety percent of a cell’s time in the normal cell cycle may be spent in interphase. During interphase, the cell may appear inactive, but there is much biochemical action happening. The centriole divides. DNA is being replicated, RNA is being synthesized and organelles are being created. Energy rich compounds necessary to mitosis are also being formed. The next step in the cell cycle, the first stage of mitosis, is prophase.
