It is often a pain when doing research to try and spell European or other non-US names and terms containing diacritical markings (i.e. Górecki, Blüme, Frédérick Françios). Most people know about the 'alt-numberpad' advantage, but many don't. It's a pain to have to change fonts in mid-word and looks bad to have the diacritics penned in on the page (imagine a discussion on the Händel v. Handel debate). Note: There are many different combinations to each character. My alt-map will differ from others. (This alt-map is from the Corel "GALLERY™ Magic" User's Guide, © 1997 Corel Corp., Ltd.)

To get these characters in any font*, follow these 3 steps:

1. hold down the 'Alt' key,

2. type in the appropriate number on the number pad (on the right side of the keyboard), and

3. release the 'Alt' key.

* These have been tested with most fonts containing basic U.S. character sets. Multinational and phonetic fonts may not have these included, as well as iconographic fonts (dingbats, mathematic), and certain user-defined fonts.
