Cairo - The City

These pictures are presented chronologically as we walked through the city of Cairo. We made our way from the hotel to an area called 'Islamic Cairo', passing through normal Egyptian neighbourhoods on our way. Delight in our photos!

This is the view from our hotel balcony. Yes, that's the Nile.

The Cairo Tower. Don't ask me what it's for.

Banks of the Nile. There are nice 'park' areas like this all over the city. Notice how many people are in this place? None, even though it's the middle of a lovely day. The reason for this is that you have to pay to get into these types of places. The bridge upon which we took this photo was heaving with bodies.

Bread, anyone?

We passed by many of these street markets. They were all jam-packed with people and merchandise. Here's another photo:

This is the sanitised version for tourists. It was located in the centre of 'Islamic Cairo' and every single shop sold tat for tourists. Plastic Tut heads, chintzy gold jewelry, hieroglyphic key chains, the lot. The tour buses were parked just down the end of this ally.

However, if you walked just a little bit north of the place in the previous photo, you came across scenes like the ones below. Overall, Cairo was a poor and dirty city.
