This 'trad. jazz' band is made up of local Tasmanian Jazz performers based in Hobart.
The name stems from 'Salamanca Place' in Hobart which hosts numerous performers,
artists and every Saturday the nationally famous Salamanca Market where
the band regularly plays. The band was started by three musicians who had studied
together at theTasmanian Conservatorium. They are: |
SALAMANCA JAZZ BAND |
Joe Richards - Banjo and Piano |
Derek Grice - Reeds |
Other members that regularly play include: Tom Black - Bass Phil Lowe - Reeds Greg Woodward - 'Cello JB - Percussion |
Usually there are 4-6 performers of a weekend but due to the easy going nature of
the band this does vary depending on whether people are able to play or not. The
band's repertoire is made up mostly of traditional Jazz numbers by Jelly Roll
Morton, Ellington and Gershwin. This music is mostly upbeat and fun and the band
reflects this. |
