Joseph Kennedy - The Man Behind The Controversy |

Joseph Kennedy told nigger jokes throughout the meals, he'd call Indians savages and blacks Sambos and curse the hell out of any one who served him from the wrong side or put one ice cube too many in his Jack Daniel's. "Can't you get any white help?" he would needle Frank. If anything, he was cruder about Jews than he was about blacks. To him they were "sheeny rag traders." He referred to the august Louis B Mayer as a "kike junkman." The worst jewish joke he told was: "What's the difference between a Jew and a pizza? The pizza doesn't cry on its way to the oven."
In 1938, Kennedy was appointed ambassador to England. During this sensitive period just prior to World War II, Kennedy made a number of unfortunate mistakes. He was an isolationist, and gave speeches that implied agreement with policies designed to appease Hitler. He announced plans to resettle 600,000 German Jews in other parts of the world—a strategy he had not discussed with President Roosevelt. There also was speculation in some newspapers that Kennedy was thinking of a run for the Presidency in 1940—speculation that irritated Roosevelt, although Roosevelt may have planted the story. Amidst mounting pressure, Kennedy was forced to resign his post in 1940. Bobby's crusade against organized crime resulted in some difficulties. A relationship betweenJoseph Kennedy and Sam Giancana existed, as he helped deliver the crucial primary votes to Kennedy in the 1960 election and saved Joe from a mob hit. The relationship between Giancana and the Kennedy's was enhanced when Frank Sinatra arranged for JFK to meet Judith Campbell. In December of 1961, Hoover informed Bobby Kennedy that Giancana felt he was "not getting his money's worth" out of his Kennedy campaign donations. This had to be a real source of tension between the two Kennedy brothers and their father. Not only was this mob association threatening the Kennedy image, Hoover of all people had it thoroughly documented. Less than a week later, Joseph suffered a massive stroke which robbed him of his power of speech. JFK got the message loud and clear and disassociated himself with Campbell and Sinatra. Giancana was furious. Not only was his influence on the Kennedy’s dwindling down to nothing, Hoover had FBI agents swarming all over him. |
