In the old time, the mountainous area of Guilan was called Daylaman and it's people were known as Daylami. Rabino believes the name of Guilan is derived from the word "Varena" meaning "untouchable land" in Avesta language and the name of a district on the north of Alborz Mountain. The word changed to "Guilan" in the course of time. The Guilanese speak in Gilaki dialect, derived from Iranian languages, which has never been distorted during the invasion of foreign cultures in the course of centuries.

The people of Guilan first believed in several gods and goddesses. In the Sassanid Era most of them converted to Zoroastrian. After falling of the Sassanid dynasty and invasion of Arabs to Iran, there had been bloody wars between Daylamians and Arabs. The first popular Alavi taking refuge in Guilan was Yahyann-e-Abdollah from the progenies of Imam Hassan(pbuh). The Alavis made the people of Guilan familiar with Islam. From that time, an inclination in converting to Shiite had been seen in the Guilanese.
