The 43rd Prophecy of Jeremiah

478 B.C.
Jeremiah 47)

1 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, (Te vagabonds.)

before (to show that this prophecy was not the anticipation of human foresight) that Pharaoh (Pharaoh-necho, after his victory over Josiah [2 Kings 23:29. 2 Chron. 35:20) smote Gaza. (Still standing at the time of this prophecy [the 4th year of Jehoiakim])
2 Thus says the LORD; "Behold, waters (the symbol of the Chaldean armies) rise up out of the north (cp. 46:20), and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.
(Looking forward to the king of Babylon, he is going everywhere.)

3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses (cp. 8;16), at the rattling of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to their sons for feebleness of hands;
(They will be helpless to even help their own children.)

4 Because of the day that comes to spoil all the Philistines (cp. 46:10), and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon (the same origin as the Philistines) every helper that remains for the LORD will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the sea coast of Caphtor. (Perhaps Crete, whence the Philistines emigrated [Gen. 10:14. Deut. 2:23. Amos 9:7)
5 Baldness (the sign of mourning. Cp. 16:6) is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley: how long will you cut yourself?"
(With the sword of the Lord, the truth.)

6 O you sword of the LORD (see Deut. 32:41), how long will it be before you be quiet? put up yourself into your scabbard, rest, and be still.
7 How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD has given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there has He appointed it.
