1 Then He called the twelve disciples together,
and gave them power (Gr. dunamis, from were our word dynamite comes from) and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
2 And He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3 And He said to them, "Take nothing with a view to your journey, neither staves (see Matt. 10:10), nor a collecting bag (for money), neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
4 And whatsoever house you may enter into, there abide, and from there depart.
5 And whosoever may not receive you, when you go out from that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them."
6 And they departed,
and went village by village, announcing the glad tidings, and healing every where.
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was being done by Him:
and he was bewildered, (i.e. seeing no way out)
because that it was said by some, that John was risen out from dead people;
8 And of some, that Elijah had appeared (i.e. in fulfillment of Mal. 4:5); and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
9 And Herod said, "John have I beheaded: but who is this, concerning whom I hear such things?"
And he was seeking (more than desired) to see Him.
10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told Him all that they had done.

And He took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida (= house of fish).
11 And the people, having got to know it, followed Him: and He received them, and spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
12 And when the day began to decline, then came the twelve, and said to Him, "Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge (peculiar to Luke), and get provisions: for we are here in a desert place."
13 But He said to them, "Give you them to eat." And they said, "We have no more but five loaves and two fishes, [therefore are not able to give them to eat] unless indeed we should go and buy food for all this people."
14 For they were about five thousand men. And He said to His disciples, "Make them recline by fifties in a company."
15 And they did so, and made them all recline.
16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to the heaven, He blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that was over and above to them, twelve baskets. (See Matt. 14:20)
18 And it came to pass, in His praying, His disciples were with Him: and He asked them, saying, "Who say the people that I am?"
19 They answering said, "John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again."
20 He said to them, "But whom say you that I am?"

21 And He strictly charged (under penalty) them, and commanded them to tell no man this; (Thus the 2nd of the 4 great periods of the Lord's ministry. Enough had been said and done by Him.)

22 Saying, "The Son of man it is necessary to suffer many things (this is the 1st mention of His sufferings. Note that these are never mentioned apart from the "glory" [vv. 26,27]in either O.T. or N.T.), and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes (after trial, therefore trial premeditated, and deliberate), and be slain, and be raised the third day." (See Matt. 27:63)
23 And He said to them all, If any man desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and let him take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
24 For whosoever desires to save his soul shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for My sake, the same shall save it.
25 For what is a man profited, having gained the whole world, having destroyed himself, or suffer loss?
26 For whosoever may have been ashamed of Me (implying before man) and of My words, of the [one] shall the Son of man be ashamed, when He shall come in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels.
27 But I tell you of a truth (thus emphasizing the following statement), there be some of those standing here, which shall in no way experience [the approach of] death, till they may possibly have seen see the kingdom of God.
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, He took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29 And it came to pass in His praying, the appearance of His face [became] different, and His raiment was white and shining forth(as though from internal light).
30 And, behold, there were talked with Him two men, who were Moses and Elijah:
31 Who being seen in glory, were speaking of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. (His death did not merely happen. It was He Who Himself accomplished it and fulfilled all the Scriptures concerning it. Cp. v.53 and Isa. 50:7.)
32 But Peter and they that were with Him were oppressed with sleep: and on fully waking up, they saw His glory, and the two men that stood with Him.
33 And it came to pass, in their departing from Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master (used only of Christ, as having authority), it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah:" not knowing what he said.
34 While He thus spoke, there came to be a cloud, and enveloped them (i.e. the 3, not the 6, as the Apostles heard the voice "out of" the cloud): and they feared in their entering into the cloud.
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son: hear you Him." (Listen to Him with understanding)
36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone (not even disciples with Him). And they were silent, and told no one in those days any of those things which they had seen. (God wanted these 3 to have more knowledge of upcoming traumatic events of the Crucifixion. If you listen carefully, God will foretell us all things for peace of mind.)

37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the mountain, much people met Him.
38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, "Teacher, I beseech You, look upon my son: for he is my only child."
39 And, lo, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly (always connected with supernatural events) cries out; and it throws him into convulsions with foaming, and making a complete wreck of him (cp. Mark 5:4. Rev. 2:27) hardly departs from him.
40 And I besought Your disciples to cast it out;
and they could not.
41 And Jesus answering said, "O unbelieving and perverted generation (something was wrong within the ranks. See v.46), how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? (He wasn't going to be with them much longer, and if they didn't sharpen up and gain knowledge of how to handle this, they would be in bad shape. Cp. Acts 18:14. 2 Cor. 11:1)
Bring your son here."
42 And as he was yet coming near, the demon (demonic spirit, it was the devil himself) dashed him down, and completely convulsed him.
And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, (See Matt. 17:14-21)
and delivered him again to his father.
43 And they were all astonished at the majesty of God.
But while they were wondering every one at all things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples,
44 Let these words sink down into your ears (Get this in your head, get it straight): for the Son of man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men." (The 2nd announcement of His sufferings.)
45 But they were ignorant of this saying, and it was veiled from them, that they should not understand it: and they feared to ask Him of that saying. (They didn't want to get on His bad side)

48 And said to them, "Whosoever shall receive this child in My name receives me: and whosoever shall receive me receives Him that sent Me: (Christ was a servant to all, you must be so also. See Rom. 8)
for he that subsists lowest among you all, the same shall be great." (Not greatest)

52 And sent messengers before His face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans (cp. 2 Kings 17:26-33), to prepare [reception] for Him.
53 And they did not receive Him, because His face was as though He was going to Jerusalem. (He was preparing the way)
54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, will You that we should call fire to come down from the heaven, and consume them, as Elijah also did? (See 1 Kings 1:10. What are the doing? Christ didn't condemn the Samaritan here.)
55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, "You know not what manner of spirit you are of.
56 For the Son of man came not to destroy men's souls, but to save them." (You don't destroy innocent ignorant people) And they went to different village.

57 And it came to pass, that, in their going in the way, a certain man (a scribe [Matt. 8:19]) said to Him, "Lord (Gr. Kurios means owner), I will follow You wheresoever You go." (He thinks he is ready)
58 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the heavens have nests; but the Son of man has no where to lay His head." (See Matt. 8:20, and cp. Rev. 14:14. They were travelers)
59 And He said to another, "Follow me." (a direct order) But he said, "Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father." (A euphemism for declining an invitation, as the Jews buried within 24 hours and did not leave the house for 10 days. He was in the process of dying and it could take up to a year for him to die, and then they would miss the Crucifixion.)
60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead: but go you and declare the kingdom of God." (Teach King is coming and the full Gospel, all of it. See Acts 13:26-44. 21:26. Rom. 9:17)
61 And another also said, "Lord, I will follow You; but allow me first go bid them farewell, which are in my home."
62 And Jesus said to him, "No one, having put his hand to the plow (you need both hands on plow. If you look back, you're going to go off the path), and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."
