Nehemiah 7)
1 Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
2 That I gave my brother Hanani (he must have returned to Jerusalem with Nehemiah. Cp. 1:2), even Hananiah the ruler of the stronghold (Cp. 2:8. North of the Temple area), charge over Jerusalem: for he was as [it were] truth's own man, and revered God (Elohim) above many.
3 And I said to them, "Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by (as on guard), let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his dwelling."
4 Now the city was wide and large: but the people were few therein (this could not have been said if Zerubbabel had already returned with nearly 50,000 people [Ezra 2:64-67]), and the houses were not built.

(This portion corresponds with Ezra 1:5-2:70. Therefore all the precedes [1:1-7:] must come, chronologically, before Ezra 1:5. Nehemiah's record here interrupted, and resumed after some 12 years. See 5:14. This portion was written after the Temple had been rebuilt [cp. 8:5,16], when Darius Hystaspis was reigning)
5 And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy.
426 B.C.
And I found (this account probably written long after this date [426]; say, between 404 and 400 B.C.) a register (which is here inserted. It consist of Judah and Benjamin. Levi was here not a distinct community [cp. Deut. 10:8,9) of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,

7 Who came with Zerubbabel (this was in 426 B.C. The covenant and seperation did not take place till 404 B.C. 22 years later [ch. 10 were Zerubbabel is not mentioned, probably because then]), Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this; (another proof that Israel is not exclusively used of the 10 tribes. See 1 Kings 12:17. The names are repeated from Ezra 2. See v.66)
