Psalm 16)
1 Preserve (cp. Heb. 5:7-9) me, O GOD (El): for in You do I flee for refuge.
2 O my soul ("Oh my soul" should be omitted), I said have said to the LORD (Yehovah), "You are my Lord:
I have no good beyond You;
3 As for the saints (holy [or separated] ones. See Ex. 3:5) that are in His own Land,
and the excellent, in them is all my (or, His, i.e. Yahaveh) delight."
4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god:
their drink offerings of blood will I not offer,
nor take up their names (i.e. the names of their gods) into my lips.
5 The LORD is the portion (for the 4 things: portion, here; path, presence, pleasures [v.11]) of my inheritance and of my cup:
You will maintain my lot.
6 The lines are fallen to me in pleasant places;
yea, I have a goodly heritage. (In vv.5,6 - lot and lines put for the land thus allotted by it.)
7 I will bless the LORD, Who has given me counsel:
my reins (put for thought) also will instruct me in the night seasons.
V2 f 8. Yahaveh at my right hand. (Life.) g 9. Rest in hope. Positive. (Death.) g 10. Not left in Sheol. Negative. (Resurrection.) f 11. I at His right hand. (Ascension.)
8 I have set the LORD always before me:
because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved (cp. 15:5).
9 Therefore I myself (like "my soul") is glad, and my glory (put for the powers of the mind which give the glory) rejoices:
my flesh also shall rest in hope. (Refers to Messiah's death.)
10 For You will not leave me in the grave (Heb. Sheôl);
neither will You give (or suffer) Your Holy One (or, Your beloved: i.e. Christ the Messiah [Acts 2:27]. See 52:9) to experience (or know) corruption. (Refers to the Resurrection. Showing that it is the body that is referred to.)
11 You will shew me the path of life (refers to Ascension):
in Your presence is fulness of joy; (Quoted in Acts 2:25-28; 13:25)
At Your right hand (cp. v.8) there are pleasures for evermore.
