Psalm 40)
1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
And He has inclined unto me, and has heard my cry.
2 He has brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay,
And set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
3 And He has put a new song (see 33:3) in my mouth, even praise to our God:
Many shall peer and revere,
And shall confide in the LORD. (Without Him you are stuck in the mud.)
4 Happy is that strong man that makes the LORD his trust,
And respects not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. (Don't listen to the traditions of men.)
5 Many, O LORD my God, are Your wonderful works which You did, (So numerous you can't count them all.)
And Your thoughts which are to us-ward:
They cannot be reckoned up in order to You:
Fain would I declare and speak of them,
They are more than can be numbered (or rehearsed)

6 Sacrifices and offering You did not desire; (Note the 4 great offerings here, and separately: Ps. 40:6-, = any sacrifice; -6-, the meal offering; -6-, burnt offering; -6, sin offering [cp. Ps. 22]; and in Ps 69 = the trespass offering. He didn't want burnt animals, He wants your love.)
My ears have You dug: (= opening by digging, or boring)
Burnt offering and sin offering hid You not required. (Obedience is the great truth here conveyed; and, on the same grounds as in 2 Sam. 15:22. Jer. 7:22,23. Heb. 10:5, is not a quotation of this verse: it is what Messiah "said" when He came into the world to perform what Ps. 40:6 prophesied, when He had become incarnate, and could say "I am come". He must change the word "ears" for the "body", in which that obedience was to be accomplished, and He had a right to change the words, and thus adapt them.)
7 Then said I (i.e. at Incarnation, when He "came into the world" [Heb. 10:5]), "Lo, I come:
In the volume of the book [of the law] (Christ is the Ling Word) it is prescribed for Me,
8 I delight to do Your good pleasure, O my God: (Quoted in Heb. 10:5-9)
Yes, You law is in the midst of my bowels (i.e. my inward parts).
9 I have declared as glad tidings righteousness in the great assembly: (Ps. 22. Heb. 2:14. As he was being crucified.)
Lo, I have not refrained my lips,
O LORD, You know.
10 I did not hid Your righteousness within my heart;
I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation (or deliverance):
I did not concealed Your loving-kindness and Your truth in the great congregation.

11 You will not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O LORD:
Let Your loving-kindness and Your truth continually preserve me.
12 For innumerable calamities have compassed me about: (He, Christ, knew who caused it. Still, He was able.)
My iniquities (put for their punishments. Laid on Him as the substituted sacrifice) have taken hold upon me, so that I was not able to look up;
They were more than the hairs of my head: therefore my heart (put for courage) failed me.
13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me:
O LORD, make haste to help me.
14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together
That seek after my soul to destroy it;
Let them be driven backward and put to shame
That wish me evil.
15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame
That say to me, 'Aha, aha.'
16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in You:
Let such as love Your salvation say continually,
The LORD be magnified.
17 But I am afflicted and needy;
Yet the Lord will think (put for all the thoughts can devise, plan, or order. He has the time.) upon me:
You are my help and my deliverer; (see Psalm 78.)
Make no tarrying, O my God."
